Cops: Death of Pakistani not related to Sulu raid

SEMPORNA: A fish-bomb thrown into a house occupied by Pakistani nationals killed one man who only three months ago, had come to stay with friends at Kampung Air Tengah.

The body of Attaulah Hukmat Khan, 35, was found floating in the water by villagers after he was believed hit by a homemade bomb around4.05am Tuesday.

And police were quick to thwart off suggestions that the attack had any connection with the raid and ambush carried out by Sulu terrorists at Simunul in March.

State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Omar Mammah (photo) assured that police will leave no stone unturned and investigate all possible angles, to determine the motive of the attack.

Semporna police chief, DSP Mohd Firdaus Abdullah said preliminary investigation showed that Attaulah had arrived at the village about three months ago, and was staying with four other Pakistani nationals.

Mohd Firdaus also believed the victim was hit by debris from the exploded homemade fish bomb that was thrown into the house by his assailant while he was sleeping in the living room.

The explosion destroyed several parts of the wooden house.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

It was said that prior to the incident, villagers heard a loud explosion coming from the house, about 50 meters from shore.

KOTA KINABALU: Police have not established the motive for the bomb explosion in Semporna that killed a Pakistan national two days ago.

  3. "We are looking into every angle and will take statements from the man's four friends to find out who their contacts are, their connections and who they were dealing with.
"We are trying to establish a motive and it could be revenge, jealousy or other involvement.

  4. Hamza said police believed there could be more than one person responsible for the explosion.
At the moment, the forensics team is ascertaining whether the bomb used was a fish bomb or otherwise.
"As far as we know, it is a hand-made and locally made bomb. We have to wait for the post-mortem report to find out whether the victim died before or after the explosion.
"We are investigating where the bomb was installed and how it was detonated."
He said police had not received any report on a second explosion.
