DAP appeals to PAS not to pursue hudud in Kelantan

GEORGE TOWN - DAP is appealing to its counterparts PAS not to pursue with its intention to enforce hudud in Kelantan.

National DAP chairman Karpal Singh said on Saturday that the state government has no jurisdiction or power to pass the hudud law in the state.

"Hudud has very serious penalties. Only the Federal Government has the power to enact such law.

Karpal said should the law be enacted by the state, it will be unconstitutional and those charged under it can challenge it.

"Political objective must be subjected to the law.

"The Kelantan state legal advisor should advise PAS not to proceed with the implementation of hudud," Karpal said in a press conference after attending a Deepavali open house by the DAP Datuk Keramat service centre at Taman Jajar off York Road here.

He added that DAP will stand firm against the implementation of hudud and the setting up of an Islamic state in Malaysia.

It was reported in an English daily yesterday (nov 22) that, PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang is all for the implementation of hudud by the state government.

"Of course, we will support Kelantan to implement laws based on the Islamic principles although the state government are dealing with challenges and interference from the Federal Government.

"The action by the Federal Government to harass Kelantan (over plans to implement hudud) shows that it does not respect the Federal Constitution," he told reporters at the opening ceremony of the party's 59th annual muktamar (general meeting) here.

He was asked to comment on the preparation made by the Kelantan Syariah Department to implement the Islamic Law in the state.
