Police will probe a Facebook user who is said to have posted a comment insinuating there would be a riot on New Year's eve, ahead of a planned gathering next week in Kuala Lumpur.
Federal police CID director Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah said last night that a police report on the matter had been lodged.
In his posting, the user urged participants to the so-called "Rally to Topple the Government" to bring all the necessary "equipment", and to be prepared to face the police at the gathering.
He also said he was looking for a bomb.
Hadi said a special team has been set up to assist the police investigation, to be carried out under Section 124C of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment up to 15 years.
The person can also be detained under the newly-introduced Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, or Sosma, for attempts and threats to overthrow a democratically-elected government, he added.
"This will be the main investigating paper pertaining to the attempts and threats to overthrow a lawfully elected government through democratic means," said Hadi.
Last Wednesday, police lodged a report alleging attempts to overthrow the government, following banners and posters shared and distributed on the social media urging people to attend a gathering on December 31 called "Himpunan Guling Kerajaan" (Rally to Topple the Government).
The posters, however, did not carry names of the organisers.
It is believed that the gathering plans to protest the series of price hikes announced by the government over the past month.
The government earlier this month announced a hike in electricity tariffs and toll rates, effective this January .

NGO identifies for police person behind plot to topple gov't
GEORGE TOWN, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- A non-governmental organisation said here today it has provided the police with the identity of an individual who had been inviting people to a gathering at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur to allegedly overthrow the government.
Persatuan Muka Buku Pulau Pinang said it gave police the name of the individual and identity card number when it lodged a report at the Lebuh Pantai police station here on the proposed gathering.
Its chairman, Salleh Ismail, said the NGO identified the individual from a Facebook account.
"In our police report, we provided the name of the individual and identity card number to help police in their investigation," he told reporters after making the report.
Ismail said such a gathering could tarnish the image of the country and frighten away foreign tourists who would want to gather at Dataran Merdeka for the New Year Eve countdown celebration.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted as saying recently that the police viewed seriously the distribution of posters inviting the people to overthrow the government on Dec 31 and would investigate the matter.
