GEORGE TOWN - Reproductions of Johor's controversial Lego mural by Lithuanian-born street artist Ernest Zacharevic have been stuck on a wall along Ah Quee Street here, causing a local stir in Penang.
Unlike the southern state, however, the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government sees no issue with the depiction of a knife-wielding Lego man waiting to rob a Lego woman carrying a “Chanel” handbag.
The Penang Chief Minister said the stickers will remain on its city wall unless Zacharevic objects to it.
“We will not white wash it, we will not remove it but we will consult with Zacharevic on this as he is the artist who first created the mural in Johor,” the Penang lawmaker said this morning.
The state government will get Zacharevic's views on whether he wanted a reproduction of his work to be there as it is his prerogative.
“It depends on the artist as may be he may felt it is not suitable for the site, you know, artists may want their art work showcased in certain backgrounds that they find more suitable,” he said.
In the meantime, the stickers will be left on the wall untouched until Zacharevic comes back to Penang.
It is learnt that the stickers were put up last week.
Last month, the original Lego mural by Zacharevic in Johor was white washed as the authorities believed it depicted a wrong image of the state.
Zacharevic became famous for his series of wall art in the heritage zone here which was a project under the George Town Festival 2012.
His wall art including the whimsical “Little Boy with Pet Dinosaur”, poignant “Boy on a Bike” and joyful “Little Children on a Bicycle” continue to draw crowds of people every day.
Zacharevic’s other drawings in Johor Bahru depicts a couple looking at a large “tree” that is actually a patch of green moss on the wall and a water tank around a plastic pipe sticking out of a wall.
