Malaysians warned to avoid bombed areas

Malaysians have been advised to avoid Thai areas which came under bomb attacks on Sunday.

The Malaysian consulate in Songkhla issued a travel advisory to Malaysians to stay away from Padang Besar, Sadao and Danok in southern Thailand which were rocked by explosions.

First consulate officer Mohd Rozaimi Harun also advised Malaysians to avoid other areas along the Malaysia-Thailand border.

The advisory told Malaysians to be wary of certain areas in Bangkok where anti-government protests are being held.

The consulate also confirmed that no Malaysians were hurt in the blasts, as reported earlier.

Rozaimi said initial reports claiming that two Malaysians were injured were untrue.

“We received word from the Songkhla governor’s office that two Malaysians were injured and were taken to hospitals in Sadao and Padang Besar,” he said.

“However, upon sending our officers to the hospitals, no Malaysians were reported to have been admitted.”

Four explosions shook areas near the Thailand-Malaysia border, where the two Malaysians were reported to be injured along with 27 others.

The areas affected by the blasts were a police station in Padang Besar, Sadao police station, the front and back of Hotel Oliver in Danok, Bangkok Disco in Danok, and Tesco Lotus in Sadao.

Rozaimi said the consulate had also checked the name list of the 27 injured at the local police stations and found no Malaysians on the list.

Asked about conditions in Phuket, Rozaimi said: “No attacks have been reported in Phuket, therefore it is considered safe.”

Yesterday, the online portal of the Bangkok Post reported that security had been tightened in Phuket after a stolen vehicle containing explosives was found parked behind a police station in the province.
