"I am a Sunni, a Muslim that follows the Sunni school of thought," he was quoted saying.
Shiism is an Islamic school of thought that has been declared deviant in Malaysia, where almost the entire Muslim population is said to follow the Sunni school of thought.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno vice president, made the accusation against Mat Sabu yesterday during the Umno general assembly.
He called on Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom, who is in charge of Islamic affairs to take action against Mat Sabu.
The five-day assembly saw repeated attempts to target Shiites, with a call for an institute to combat Shiite teachings and even a call to amend the constitution to entrench the Sunni school into the definition of Islam.
