KOTA KINABALU - The number of flood victims in Beaufort, 97km from here, rose to 228 early today from 10 Thursday.
Beaufort District Officer Mohd Sahid Othman told Bernama they were being housed at two relief centres, 208 people from 65 families from Kampung Lago and Kampung Suasa at the centre in Kampung Suasa and 20 from six families at the Pa Musa community hall.
"The process of transferring the victims to the centres began at 3 pm yesterday," he said.
Mohd Sahid, who is also the chairman of the district disaster relief committee, said the level of Sungai Padas rose this morning to 9.06 metres, which is above the danger level of 8.70 metres.
He said his department was monitoring the situation and expected more people to be evacuated this afternoon if the rain that had been falling since yesterday morning continued unabated.
Meanwhile, floodwaters have risen to about one metre at Km14.5 of Jalan Nabawan-Sepulut, about 198km from here, allowing passage only to heavy vehicles.
Public Works Department district engineer Nabawan Mohd Hardy Laidin said the road was flooded after Sungai Pendawan burst its banks.
He advised road users in light vehicles from Kota Kinabalu or Keningau going to Tawau or vice-versa to avoid that stretch for the time being.
