Police to be thorough in probing Kok's video

The police will be thorough in their investigation of a statement by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok in a video clip that is alleged to be defamatory, said Deputy Home Minister Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said that if the police found that Kok had breached the law and the attorney-general was convinced that there was sufficient evidence against her, then the case would be brought to court.

"But if there is no breach of the law, then the AG will say no further action.

"Then nobody should say the police and the AG are weak because if the case goes to court and is thrown out, then the AG and the police will look foolish," he told reporters after members of the Sarawak Amateur Radio Emergency Services (Sares) called on him at his office in Kuching today.

Kok had claimed that the video, 'Onederful Malaysia CNY2014', uploaded onto the social media on Jan 27 was a satirical one and that it did not insult anyone.

Federal Internal Security and Public Order director Salleh Mat Rashid had said that the police would look into the alleged defamatory video clip.

Wan Junaidi said MPs had a certain amount of privilege when speaking in Parliament, but had to observe their limitations when saying anything outside the august house.

Meanwhile, Selangor Wanita Umno chief Nor Hayati Onn said it was an irresponsible act on the part of the MP to come up with such a video clip, more so when the Chinese community
were celebrating their new year.

"In this festive atmosphere, Teresa should be sensitive about what she is doing. Although it is just a Chinese New Year video clip, why should it have provocative elements, including what happened in Lahad Datu," she said in statement.

Let it serves as deterrent

She added that such action would serve as a deterrent to others not to publish insensitive materials.

Kok, who is also DAP vice-chairperson, is alleged to have uploaded the video clip on Youtube on Jan 27.

The 11.39-minute video portrayed Kok as a feng shui host interviewing three panelists regarding the CNY and their feng shui predictions.

The panelists in the video poked fun on a variety of issues such as the current education system in Malaysia, and the issue of terrorist intrusion in Lahad Datu, Sabah last year, among others.

Three non-governmental organisations, Pertubuhan Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM), Ikatan Rakyat Insan Muslim Malaysia and Persatuan Veteran Tentera Melayu (PVTM), have filed police reports over the video yesterday at the Dang Wangi police station.
