Lahad Datu Shooting: 13 soldiers remanded, victim buried

A total of 13 military personnel including the main suspect in the shooting incident Lahad Datu yesterday were remanded for eight days from today to assist in the investigation of the case that resulted in a death of a commando and serious injuries to two civilians.

All of the military personnel aged 20 to 40 years are now detained at the lock-up in the police headquarters (IPD) Lahad Datu upon remand proceedings after they were arrested in Lahad Datu.

Following their arrests, police seized 13 firearms including the firearm used by the suspect who is a member of the Regimental Special Forces commando (RGK) during the incident in front of a 24-hours convenience store in the town of Lahad Datu.

Head of Criminal Investigation Department Sabah , Senior Asst Comm Omar Mammah said all soldiers who were arrested were believed to be at the scene when the commotion started which resulted in one of them firing several shots .

Dissatisfaction

He said police believed the incident was a result of dissatisfaction by four soldiers after the entertainment centre employee prevented them from bringing in drinks bought from outside into the premises.

"This has caused the outbreak of clashes between the four soldiers with an employee of the Karaoke pub located on the top floor of the building before lingering in front of a convenience store," he said when contacted yesterday.

The incident happened at 4.45 am Tuesday. Lance Corporal Mohd Fiffixezafey Mat Husin, 28, from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, died in the emergency ward in Lahad Datu Hospital after a gunshot wound in the left chest.

The investigation at the crime scene found the 5:56 millimeter ammunition type and blood stains.

Police refused to confirm the type of weapon used by the suspect in the incident.
