Selangor MB crisis: Azmin expected to be named MB, says source

PETALING JAYA - A source close to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali has confirmed that he will be the new Selangor Mentri Besar.

“Inshaallah (God willing). An official announcement will be made soon,” the source said Monday when asked to provide further details about the appointment.

Azmin is expected to be sworn in at the Istana Alam Shah at 10am on Tuesday, and will hold his first press conference as mentri besar afterwards.

It is understood that Azmin is in the midst of discussions with PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who has been the party’s choice to become mentri besar all along.

The palace is not expected to make an official announcement on Monday, however, the appointment letter will be sent out.

In recent weeks, the party has repeatedly issued statements that it was sticking to its stand of nominating only Dr Wan Azizah, despite several reprimands from the Selangor Palace.

Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has reportedly interviewed and vetted three candidates for the job, PAS state assemblymen Iskandar Samad and Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, as well as Azmin.

However, Azmin was the Sultan’s preferred choice after the PKR number two’s interview lasted longer than most, while it has always been agreed that the mentri besar post was PKR’s.
