KOTA KINABALU - Five men sustained serious injuries when a portion of the glass cantilever canopy in front of the main entrance facing the soon-to-be opened Imago Complex of the KK Times Square retail shopping mall collapsed, Monday.
The men, aged between 17 and 26, comprised three foreigners and two locals, and were still warded in hospital at press time.
KK Times Square Senior Management Officer Carriek Chong when met at the scene said there was a crashing sound at around 11am.
"We went out to find the canopy had collapsed," he said, adding that the construction started three years ago and was scheduled for completion in March.
City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said a police team went to the scene after receiving a call at about 11.10am.
He said preliminary investigations showed that the men, construction workers, were doing works on the canopy when the incident took place.
Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the Civil Defence Department were also at the scene to assist. Meanwhile, Syarikat Kapasi Sdn Bhd KK Times Square Project Senior Manager Liong Chee Gin said the company was saddened by the incident.
He said in a statement that investigations are being carried out to find out the cause.
"We wish to inform that all of them (injured) are undergoing medical treatment and are recuperating.
"We are currently investigating the cause or reasons that led to this incident together with our main contractor and consultants," he said in a brief statement.
According to Liong, they would work closely with the local authorities to receive approval before they commence work at the site.
"Despite this unforeseen event, we would like to assure you that the company adhered to high on-site safety procedures and measures throughout the course of construction," he said.
Syarikat Kapasi Sdn Bhd is a subsidiary of Asian Pac Holdings Bhd.
