A 12-year-old girl who was 'married' in an Islamic ceremony to a 27-year-old man fell pregnant but miscarried, a court has heard.
The ceremony between the girl, who cannot be named, and the male took place a house in the Hunter Valley, Fairfax reports.
The girl was taken to Westmead Children Hospital after complaining of sharp pains in the abdominal area, doctors later found she suffered an ectopic pregnancy but she had miscarried.
In October last year the man, who also cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to one count of persistent sexual abuse of a child.
Fairfax reports the man's student visa was cancelled and he is being held at Villawood Immigration Detention Centre until he is sentenced, the maximum jail time is 25 years for the offence.
The court was told the man first met the child at a mosque in November 2013 and made inquiries about marrying her, he was later told she was not interested as he was 'too old'.
Imams from the girl's family's mosque told the man any marriage would be illegal and they would not assist, but Sheikh Muhammad Tasawar agreed to "marry" the couple.
However a ceremony took place in Arabic at a home on January 12 2014 and the couple had sexual relations and moved into a house in western Sydney.
Police were alerted to the case when the man tried to enroll the girl at a high school and become her guardian.
Fairfax reports that in March last year Tasawar, 35, pleaded to the offence of solemnisation of a marriage by an unauthorised person and he was fined $500 and his Religious Leaders visa was cancelled.
