Philippines, Malaysia intensify search over Sandakan kidnapping

The Philippines and Malaysia have intensified cooperation in trying to find the four gunmen that kidnapped two people in Sandakan, Sabah on Thursday (May 14).

The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said in a statement that it was deeply concerned about the kidnapping incident where two Malaysians were taken from a seafood restaurant near its coastline.

"Philippine police authorities in nearby areas have been alerted for possible interdiction, in the event the perpetrators and their victims are headed their way," it said.

The embassy added that Philippine's maritime units and anti-kidnapping operatives have been actively and closely coordinating with their Malaysian counterparts in exchanging information and addressing the threats from kidnapping groups.

"We are hopeful that with intensified cooperation, this current kidnapping incident will be resolved at the earliest opportunity."

According to The Star Online, four gunmen linked to the Abu Sayyaf rebel group from southern Philippines stormed into a popular eatery in the east of Sabah, and abducted its manager and a customer.

The kidnapping took place at the seaside Ocean King Seafood Restaurant in the town of Sandakan at around 8pm (Singapore time) on Thursday. The gunmen fled by boat less than a minute later, with the abductees.
