Sabahans join in Kaamatan festivities

KOTA KINABALU - Thousands of people joined in the festivities of Kaamatan at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association hall, or Hongkod Koisaan (KDCA).

Kaamatan, or Harvest Festival, is held annually to celebrate the bountiful harvest and a significant day to the native Kadazandusun and Murut (KDM) people in Sabah.

Families from all races could be seen mingling with friends at foodstalls and the various exhibition booths at the hall.

There were also large crowds at the various traditional wooden and bamboo houses that had been decorated with handicrafts.

Lilian Foo, mother of two, was with her children jumping at the Lansaran - a bamboo and wooden trampoline - built within the longhouse with about 20 others. It was her first time on the Lansaran and she had never imagined it to be so much fun.

"I am from Sabah but this is our first time at the Kaamatan festival and also our first time on the Lansaran.

"It is so much fun though I was a little nervous at first because I don't know if the building or the Lansaran can house so many jumping people," she said.

"This is a wonderful experience for tourists and us locals. I will definitely come back with my children and relatives next year," she said.

New Zealand couple Alan Joe and Samantha Curray, who were waiting to try on the Lansaran, said they found out about the festival via the Internet.

"This is our first time to Sabah and while searching through the Internet for activities to attend we found out about the Kaamatan festival," said Samantha adding that the Lansaran of the Murut house was also a "must try activity."

"We are so lucky to have come here at this time of the year because there are so many things to see, and so many cultural events to experience," she said.

"We are truly amazed by the way people of all race and religion can come together," she added.
