Geologists call for new trail up Kinabalu

RANAU - Government geologists have suggested that a new trail be cut for climbers to scale Mount Kinabalu.

Jontih Enggihom of Sabah Minerals and Geoscience said the present trail up the mountain was no longer safe after the earthquake on June 5.

A rock slide from the peak had gathered at Km6 to Km6.9, making it unsafe for climbing at the moment. “The unstable condition of the rock slide would cause the rocks to slide down whenever there is a strong tremor or heavy rain,” he said.

Stretches of the climbing trail could not be used because of severe damage such as at Km1.6, and the earthquake had caused the mountain slopes to crack.

He said the department was also prepared to cooperate with the Sabah Parks in constructing safer new trails.

A map of high-risk areas should also be made, especially in terms of the structure of the areas concerned.

The earthquake on June 5 was not caused by volcanic activity. Mount Kinabalu was not a dead or inactive volcano as some thought but consists of granodiorite rocks, he said.

The hot springs at Poring had turned muddy, not caused by volcanic action but because of the earthquake, he said.
