SAPP urges speedy action by Committee on illegals

KOTA KINABALU - Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has expressed concern that the proposals submitted to the Technical committee on Immigrant Management have not been deliberated on.

Its deputy president, Edward Dagul, said in a press statement yesterday that following the Independent Monitoring and Action Committee (IMAC) meeting with Tan Sri Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan and the Technical Committee on Immigrant Management on April 15, SAPP has through its president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, submitted further materials on April 24 for the Technical Committee’s further action.

The materials submitted included a position paper entitled ‘Illegal immigrants in Sabah – The mother of all threats’, as well as a witness statement by Datuk Yong Teck Lee in the RCI proceedings.

“Two months on and still no news from the committee. We hope that it is not a case of too little, too late when dealing with the perennial problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah,” Edward said.

“As mentioned time and again, the people of Sabah expect this illegal immigrant problem to be resolved in the shortest possible time.

“Strong political will would be needed to formulate corrective measures to the current laws, including heavier penalties and transparency,” said Edward.
