Financial problems are believed to be among the motives behind the kidnapping of a five-year-old child in Jalan Cahaya Suria, Sungai Chuah, yesterday morning.
Selangor police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said following the incident, four men were arrested, including a businessman and the taxi driver who sent the child home.
In the incident, which took place at 9.26am, the boy was abducted by two men in a Proton Saga and safely returned about eight hours later.
Abdul Samah said that soon after the incident, the victim’s father, who works as a contractor, received a call from a suspect who demanded a ransom of RM300,000.
“The money was left in an area adjacent to Tesco Saujana Impian in Kajang because the father feared for the safety of his son.
“Subsequently, the police formed a special team and arrested two men, aged 28 and 32, at 10.10pm on the same day at a market in Sungai Chuah, Kajang.
“Police also found RM30,000 under the car seats of the suspect’s car,” he said at a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters here.
He said following the arrests, police detained a 45-year-old businessman who is believed to be the key suspect at a house in Kajang Raya.
He said police found RM60,500 which is believed to be the ransom money hidden under the seat of a motorcycle and another RM200,000 in a shop owned by the suspect.
“Initial checks show the suspect knew the victim and lived about two to three kilometers from the victim’s home.
“We believe this incident was motivated by money as the suspect’ was facing financial problems,” he said.
Abdul Samah the 42 year-old taxi driver was also detained for questioning and police will investigate the involvement of the taxi driver in the incident.
He said all the detainees did not have past criminal records and will be remanded for investigation.
Following the arrest of four, he said police seized RM291,550 in cash and two fake vehicle registration plates, the Proton Saga car allegedly used to abduct and a taxi.
The case is being investigated under Section 3 (1) of the Kidnapping Act 1969 and could carry the death penalty upon conviction.
Meanwhile, the victim only suffered bruises on the hands and body as a result of the incident, though he is still traumatised.
