Former Umno assemblyman shot dead at his home.

MARANG - Explosive shots that sounded like firecrackers led a group of villagers to look out and caught a glimpse of two suspects fleeing on a motorcycle out of the home of former Alor Limbat state assemblyman Alias Abdullah.

In the 2pm incident, Alias, 51, was shot dead at his home in Kampung Alor Limbat Bukit Payong here after Friday prayers.

According to a witness Abdul Wahab Muhammad, 35, who was resting with four others in a shed near the scene of the incident, heard shotgun sounds before rushing to take a closer look.

"When I came out, I saw a big-sized suspect with helmet hastily running towards his accomplice who was waiting on his motorcycle going out of the victim's house.

"They fled on a motorcycle with the registration plate removed and proceeded to chase them besides also getting the help of the villagers but they escaped upon reaching Kampung Batu 12," he said when met by reporters here today.

Abdul Wahab said before the incident, he actually saw the two suspects riding the motorcyle towards the victim's house but did not suspect anything.

Alias, who was believed to have been shot at close range, was then rushed to the Bukit Payung health clinic by his neighbour Mohd Zuraini Mamat where he was given emergency treatment at about 2.15pm but succumbed to his injuries.

Another villager Fazil Yusof, 32, who also knew Alias, said the last time he met the victim was at noon in a nearby coffee shop after he attended a reception at his relative's house.

Meanwhile Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, when met at the Bukit Payung health clinic urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and identify the motive of the incident as it was not the first case to have occurred in the state.

"We also want the individual(s) responsible to be identified and prosecuted, This is a big loss for the Terengganu political scenario because the victim was an experienced person, who once served as an elected representative," he said.

Alor Limbat state assemblyman Ariffin Deraman from PAS, when met, said despite the difference in political ideologies, Alias' loss was greatly felt as he was a very respected individual even though he was no longer a serving assemblyman.

Alias was Alor Limbat state assemblyman for two terms since 2004 but was defeated by PAS candidate in the 13th general election while his last political post was as Alor Limbat Umno branch head.

Before becoming the people's representative, he was the Head of Terengganu's state Prosecution Unit (Deputy Public Prosecutor/Senior Federal Counsel) from May 1, 1997 to Nov 18, 1999.

He is survived by his wife Noreha Mohamad, 45 and four children.

His remains will be buried at the Kampung Alur Limbat Muslim cemetery after Isyak prayers tonight. — Bernama
