Harmony the pillar of Sarawak’s stability, progress - Wong

SIBU - Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the harmony factor was the key in the stability and progress of Sarawak.

Speaking at the double-joy event of Ur Par Wang Kong Temple to celebrate the temple’s opening and birthday of Ur Par Wang Kong deity on Sunday, Wong said Sarawak was a state with the most ethnic groups—27.

He told visitors at the gathering: “Do not be surprised to see non-Chinese political leaders in Sarawak taking part in temple celebrations and giving government grants to temples. The government will continue to support the building of temples, churches and mosques.”

Wong opined harmony would continue to be the focal point and foundation to drive the government’s rural transformation programmes.

“Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem has already granted RM400 million for rural transformations. Our harmony factor will build better living for all, but it needs the people to participate. The government alone cannot create wonders.”

On religious values, he said the people must work towards building morally upright lives and embrace the joy of giving and sharing.

“These values uplift social living and harmony. They have not changed with time.”

Also present were temple chairman Yeo Keng Teck, organising chairman Ling How Kang, Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee, UPP Pelawan Branch chairwoman Kapitan Datuk Janet Lau and Sibu UCA in-coming president Kong Hian Khim.
