CIA-link claim preposterous, says Ambiga

Former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan has taken Umno information chief Annuar Musa to task over his remarks regarding her successor Maria Chin Abdullah.

She described Annuar’s allegations against the Bersih chairperson as outrageous and irresponsible.

“I dare him to make them on affidavit so that we may cross examine him on it. He is well aware that there is ongoing court proceedings relating to the release of Maria from detention.

“These serious and unfounded allegations can be viewed as a gross interference in those proceedings,” she told Malaysiakini.

Annuar claimed that Maria, who was detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act last week, has links to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

He alleged that Maria, along with her late husband Yunus Lebai Ali, are linked to the CIA through her work in several NGOs back in the 1980s, such as National Institute for Electoral Integrity (NIEI).

Meanwhile, Ambiga, who is a former Malaysian Bar president, said Annuar would be held accountable for his remarks.

“We will certainly be taking instructions on holding Annuar accountable, whether by way of a suit in defamation or other process.

“Clearly he is aware that there is no basis for Maria's detention and is vainly trying to use preposterous allegations against Maria who cannot at this point defend herself because she is unfairly detained,” she added.

Ambiga urged the Umno leader to immediately retract his “baseless accusations” or face the consequences.

A habeas corpus application was filed yesterday to secure Maria’s release, and the hearing is slated for case management tomorrow.
