Wanted robbery suspect nabbed after chase drama and bid to ram police

KOTA KINABALU - A man wanted for robbing and injuring a woman recently tried to run over police with his car in a bid to escape arrest today.

Policemen fired several shots, hitting one of the tyres, but the suspect continued to drive away. However, during the chase he lost control of the vehicle, which then plunged into the Sembulan River.

City police chief Habibi Majinji said the man tried to swim away but was caught.

Habibi said the 28-year-old suspect had also dyed his hair a different colour, hoping to escape detention.

He said the man was wanted for questioning over a case in Taman Hiburan where a woman was seriously hurt after being attacked with a sharp object.

“The 30-year-old woman had just got home that day when a man confronted her. She suffered serious head injuries after being assaulted with a sharp object. Her belongings such as jewellery and cash were all taken away,” he said, adding the woman was in a stable condition.

Recounting the events, he said following a tip-off, police located the suspect at the shopping mall today.

“Our police team tried to detain him when he was about to get into his car.

“But the suspect managed to get behind the wheel and tried to run over the police, resulting in our team firing several shots, hitting the front tyre on the right side,” he said.
