It was reported by Malaysiakini that top editors of three Chinese newspapers were called to the Home Ministry yesterday, apparently in relation to reports favourable to the Bersih 2.0 rally organisers.
A source who made the claim also said that show-cause letters are to follow soon.
News of the meeting flashed around the industry when the editors went back to their respective offices and held internal meetings.
The Publications Control and Al-Quran text unit eventually confirmed that the meeting was held, but brushed it off as a 'regular meeting'.
"We have meetings with (editors of) Chinese, Malay and English newspapers from time to time to point out 'uncomfortable' reports," unit head Abd Aziz Md Nor said when contacted today.
He had initially denied that any such meeting had taken place, only admitting to it after the ministry's secretary-general Mahmood Adam confirmed it.
'No warnings'
Abdul Aziz refused to reveal if the meeting was related to reports on last Saturday's Bersih 2.0 rally, saying those concerned had discussed "various issues".
He also said no verbal warnings had been issued.
When pressed as to whether show-cause letters would be issued, he reiterated: "I have told you, no warnings".
He also would not say which Chinese newspapers had been asked to send representatives to the meeting.
It is understood the newspapers summoned were Sin Chew Daily, Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press.
All three are owned by media tycoon Tiong Hiew King through Media Chinese International Ltd.
