SAPP for Free and Fair elections

SAPP supports MCLM to head Bersih 2.0 campaign

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Secretary General, Datuk Richard Yong We Kong said that it was only a matter of time that ordinary people emerged to take up the campaign for free, fair and clean elections because the Elections Commission has lost the confidence of the public that is stipulated in Article 114(2) of the Federal constitution in his press conference at the party's headquarters today.

"National leaders of Bersih 2.0 like lawyers Dato Ambiga Sreenavasan and Harris Ibrahim have shown that elections are not longer the exclusive domain of political parties. In Sabah, we now see a new generation of young and brave activists emerging to campaign for free, fair and clean elections. SAPP hails the efforts of local activist Atama and others in the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement to head the Bersih 2.0 campaign in Sabah.

"Recently, at the November 4, 2010 Batu Sapi by-election, vote buying and other corrupt practices were carried out openly in broad daylight. Being a by-election, there was abundant law enforcement personnel and special “pegawai penguatkuasa kempen pilihanraya” (election campaign enforcement officers). But BN leaders were openly distributing cash in 100 ringgit notes, dishing out hampers, computers and goodies of all sorts in wheel barrows, right under the noses of EC officers! Policemen were all over the place, in every nook and corner of every village and town. Everybody saw the glaring vote buying but the police and EC could not see. These are the failures that added up to the loss of confidence in the election commission.

"BN spent an estimated at RM 20 million in the by-election, excluding the RM 150 million in government projects which are largely unfulfilled. Government radio broadcasted lies on the final day of campaigning so that the opposition had no time to rebut.

After the by-election, SAPP lodged reports with the MACC and other law enforcement agencies. But, not one official even bothered to take further statements from SAPP. Nothing came out of SAPP reports. So, how can the people believe EC? Once the people have lost confidence in the EC, people will protest, which is what is happening now in Malaysia. The Bersih 2.0 rally is caused by EC’s failure in its constitutional duty to ensure free, fair and clean elections.

"We call on the police to approve the permit for the Bersih 2.0 July 9 rally in Kota Kinabalu. The police should be reminded that on June 11, the roads around Padang Merdeka were closed for the national harvest festival and again on June 29 dinner with the Prime Minister. Last week end, the Jom Heboh programme with the Chief Minister caused traffic jams and diversions around Likas Sports Complex and Likas Bay. It is a simple exercise to allow the group to march from the Merdeka Padang to the Istana on a Saturday afternoon because there is little traffic obstruction on that short stretch of road. Therefore, there is no excuse not to permit the rally and march from Padang Merdeka to Istana.

"The police should not use the fake excuse of “communists” or “foreign elements”. Sabah is the only state that has never had the communist threat. Whereas, the only foreign elements causing security problems are illegal immigrants which the law enforcement authorities have failed to prevent from entering Malaysia.
