Telcos should reduce rates: MTUC

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) on Monday called on Telecommunication companies to improve their services and reduce their rates rather than burden the people with an extra 6 percent service tax.

Its Vice President, A. Balasubramaniam said it was most unfair for these companies to pass the tax to consumers when they could easily absorb it and still make huge profits.

He was commenting on the move by the Telcos to pass the 6 percent service tax on prepaid mobile services to consumers that went into effect on Thursday.

Last week Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the plan to impose the tax had not been approved by the Finance Ministry.

Balasubramaniam said the tax would be a big burden to ordinary workers as they were the biggest group of prepaid mobile users.

Workers were now struggling with high cost of living and stagnant low wages, thus an extra tax would surely be an added burden to them, he pointed out.

He suggested that as good corporate citizens the Telcos could ease the burden of this segment of society by providing cheaper calls with wider coverage. - Bernama

  1. well subra, thanks for your song. we appreciate it. please pass our demands to the beloved najib government to abolish any other hidden charges and taxes that only profiting the companies but burdening the peoples. almost everything/goods/materials nowadays are expensive enough for ordinary and hard earned citizen like us. this is because every taxes are passed to us, means we should bear every taxes that imposed by the gov. for example, the car taxes. a nissan navara actually priced in range between RM50K TO RM60K only before tax. after tax it's price climb up to rm105k. how much tax per car actually? the point here is, even if the AP holder paying the gov 15% to 25% for every car, they actually still profiting because any tax imposed by the gov passed to the buyer like us.
