Cover hole immediately, don't wait for investigation

KOTA KINABALU: Luyang assemblywoman Melanie Chia pointed out that government departments should not be arguing who should be responsible for the manhole at Mile 7, Jalan Tuaran Bypass that claimed the life of an eight-year-old boy.

"There is only one government. No matter which government department it is they are all under one government.

"After the tragedy, the most important thing is to immediately cover up the manhole, and not to wait for investigation, and let another tragedy occurs," she argued.

Melanie said this during her visit to the Tiong Hua Funeral Parlour with Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) deputy president cum Likas assemblyman Datuk Liew Teck Chan here yesterday.

Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir yesterday said he had instructed officers to investigate the scene where the boy was killed.

Officers from City Hall would ascertain whether the site was under City Hall or other government departments.

She also urged the government to look at the people's problems seriously, especially when it is a matter of life and death.

Government urged not to neglect basic infrastructure
KOTA KINABALU: The government should not focus so much on mega projects there by neglecting basic infrastructure such as manhole covers, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Inanam Youth chief Joseph Thadius said.

He also questioned why City Hall and the Public Works Department (PWD) had taken public safety issue lightly.

"Why did the government not learn its lesson from a similar incident in Lintas last year which also claimed the life of a child," the SAPP Central Youth Exco lamented.

Joseph said this in response to the tragic death of eight-year-old Chua Soon Lee who fell through a hole into a 12-foot deep rnonsoon drain at Mile 7, Jalan Tuaran Bypass here on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred when the Primary Two pupil of SK Telipok was out looking for scrap metal with his mother.

According to Joseph, the government was willing to spend RM388 million for the construction of a new state administrative centre but was not willing to allocate more than RM200 to install basic amenities sucn as a drain cover.

SAPP Kota Kinabalu Youth had, before this, raised the issue of a broken drain cover near a school in Likas through social network Facebook. Although City Hall responded to the complaint after four weeks of in action, the local authority then disclosed that the area was under the jurisdiction of the PWD, Joseph said.

He added that to prevent any unwanted incidents, SAPP Youth organised a gotong royong to repair the drain with financial assistance from Likas assemblyman Datuk Liew Teck Chan.

"SAPP Youth therefore urges the Barisan Nasional government to prepare, an allocation to repair all basic amenities in the state, especially damaged and missing drain covers so that there will not be a similar tragedy."
