Dear voters of Sabah and Sarawak

By Raja Petra Kamarudin

But all these years since 1963, Sabah and Sarawak were treated as merely two of the 13 states of Malaysia. And this was able to happen because Barisan Nasional rules your states and Barisan Nasional is also the federal government. Hence the federal government can do what it likes to Sabah and Sarawak. However, if Sabah and Sarawak had opposition state governments -- like in Selangor, Kedah, Penang and Kelantan -- then Sabah and Sarawak will, again, be independent states although still members of the Federation or the United States of Malaya.

Dear voters of Sabah and Sarawak,

First of all, I initially intended to write this letter in Bahasa Malaysia, which means I would need someone to help me translate it. However, I was told that many of you are proficient in English and actually visit English language websites rather than Bahasa websites (Sabah and Sarawak readers represent 5% of Malaysia Today’s total readership of almost half a million). So allow me to continue in English.

The purpose of this ‘open’ letter is to state my stand on various issues. You already know my stand on the Oil Royalty issue, which I wrote about on 7 February 2012 (EPISODE 1: How East Malaysia and Terengganu were robbed of their wealth).  I also included Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah’s statement on video (EPISODE 3: Ku Li talks about the mysterious plane crash in Sabah) about the tragic and mysterious plane crash that wiped out half of Sabah’s cabinet at the height of the oil royalty negotiations, which I was told had broken down.

Now, let’s move on to the next issue.

On the status of Sabah and Sarawak, we must remember that on 31st August 1957, the Federation of Malaya (Persekutuan Tanah Melayu) was formed, which was a union of three groupings: the Straits Settlements, the Federated Malay States and the Unfederated Malay States.

For all intents and purposes, the Federated and Unfederated Malay states were independent states (the Straits Settlements were British Colonies) or at least were given a perception of independence. The British in those states were just advisors. Nevertheless, whether the Rulers in those states were obligated to take the advice of the British, or they could ignore it, is an issue which historians are still debating till today and they will all probably go to their graves without coming to any consensus.

I would sum it up by saying that the Rulers were not obligated to take the advice of the British Advisors. However, knowing what the British are like, they have ways of persuading the Rulers to take the advice. Gunboat diplomacy is one persuasive method that comes to mind. Another very persuasive method would be to support a pretender to the throne in the many power struggles (even today it is still happening in some states) and once there is a change of regime the new Ruler would be obligated to listen to the British who had put him onto the throne.

Nevertheless, the British in the spirit of diplomacy never demonstrated force. Persuasion was the order of the day. And I am sure that when Sabahans saw what happened to those who resisted the federal government’s move to take the state resources and just throw back 5% to the state as royalty, the new Sabah regime was ‘persuaded’ to accept the 5% and shut the fxxk up.

Anyway, back to the issue of the Federation of Malaya. As I said, 11 states under three groupings merged into a union. While the Americans call theirs a union, the British preferred the term federation. I suppose the British hate the Americans for losing the war so they did not want to be seen as copying the Americans. Hence we became the Federation of Malaya rather than the Union of Malay States or the United States of Malaya.

But that was what we really were, the United States of Malaya. And that would mean other than matters involving security, defence and foreign policy, the rest are state matters and under the power of the states. Certainly we cannot have the Selangor Police Force like they do in the US. We cannot have a State judiciary with different laws across states. Kelantan also cannot declare war on Thailand or Johor on Singapore. And so on. But the rest comes under the states.

Now, what has happened over 51 years from 1957 to 2008 is as follows. Most states at most times were under the ruling party in Parliament. Except for Kelantan and Penang (from 1969 to 1973), the states were federal-ruled. (1978-1990 Umno ruled Kelantan). Hence, it meant that the states were forced to subject themselves to the federal government.

No doubt, there were times when the states did try to demonstrate their independence from federal rule. The state Menteri Besar would sometimes defy the Prime Minister, like what happened in Selangor once when they resisted the takeover of Putrajaya to turn it into Federal Territory.

Then what happened to this Menteri Besar? He was forced to resign due to a sex scandal. Honestly, if sex scandals are reasons to force a Menteri Besar to resign then the only Menteris Besar or Chief Ministers still in office would probably be in the Pakatan Rakyat states.

Yes, the state CEO does not defy the PM. To do so would mean you get forced out of office, if you don’t first die in a plane crash. And why do you think Dr Mahathir Mohamad appointed Ministers who are corrupt and have scandals and skeletons in their closet? Are you so stupid that I need to answer that question?

You can’t control a clean person. A tainted person can be kept in line. All Dr Mahathir had to do was to show this person the thick file he has on him or her and that person will submit to whatever the Prime Minister says.

And that was why Sabah and Sarawak got a raw deal. The CEOs you have for your two states are tainted. They can go to jail for 1,000 years if the federal government releases its dogs on the Chief Ministers of your two states.

How much is Taib worth? Tens of billions! Musa Aman is now worth more than RM1.5 billion. Some say it is double that. Whatever it is, he did not make that kind of money by skipping lunch every day.

Do you think that the CEOs of Sabah and Sarawak dare oppose the federal government? Do you think that the CEOs of Sabah and Sarawak dare fight for the rights and interests of Sabahans and Sarawakians? Do you think that the CEOS of Sabah and Sarawak have a death wish?

Hence, there would be no way you people of Sabah and Sarawak can get a better deal as long as Barisan Nasional is in power in the states. You can oust Taib and Musa Aman if you wish. But as long as the replacement is still from Barisan Nasional, then another tainted man will take the throne because only tainted people can be controlled. No way will Barisan Nasional appoint someone like Nik Aziz of Kelantan to become the Chief Minister of Sabah or Sarawak, not while your two states have so much wealth, which the federal government wants to rob.

Okay, let’s now talk about the new Federation, the Federation of Malaysia. I have explained that the Federation of Malaya was a union of 11 states under three groupings. Then, the Federation of Malaya negotiated with Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and Brunei to form the Federation of Malaysia.

Hence the Federation of Malaysia was a new union of five nation-states -- a Federation or Union of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and Brunei.

Brunei did not want to join because they knew they would be swallowed up. Singapore joined but Lee Kuan Yew insisted that he become the Prime Minister of Singapore. He did not want to become the Chief Minister of Singapore like how Tunku Abdul Rahman wanted.

The Tunku was furious. Malaysia can’t have two Prime Ministers, argued the Tunku. The Tunku was the Prime Minister of Malaysia so Lee Kuan Yew has to be the Chief Minister of Singapore, not the Prime Minister of Singapore.

The solution was simple: if Lee Kuan Yew wants to become the Prime Minister of Singapore then Singapore has to leave Malaysia. Then he can even become the King or Emperor of Singapore if he wants to.

And that was why Singapore left Malaysia. Some historians say that Lee Kuan Yew purposely raised the issue of becoming the Prime Minister of Singapore because he knew that this could not be accepted and hence that would mean Singapore would have to leave or get kicked out of Malaysia.

Whatever it may be Lee Kuan Yew’s argument was that Singapore is at par with Malaya, not at par with Selangor, Perak, Johor, or whatever. This meant Singapore is above the 11 states, not just one more state of 14 states.

And would this not also apply to Sabah and Sarawak? Is Sabah the 12th state and Sarawak the 13th state of Malaysia? Or are the 11 states below Sabah and Sarawak and Sabah and Sarawak equal to Malaya?

The 11 states have Chief Police Officers. Sabah and Sarawak have Police Commissioners. And the Police Commissioner gets to fly the state flag on his official car. Does this not show that Sabah and Sarawak are above the 11 states?

Bahasa Malaysia Bibles and the use of the word Allah are banned in the 11 states of Malaya but not in Sabah and Sarawak.

The Immigration Department in Selangor, Perak, Johor, etc., cannot bar Haris Ibrahim from going to those states but he can, and in fact is, barred from entering Sabah and Sarawak.

Lawyers from Malaya can’t practice in Sabah and Sarawak unless they first obtain a permit. They do not need to do the same to practice in Selangor, Perak, Johor, etc.

So you see, Sabah and Sarawak are not equal to Selangor, Perak, Johor, etc. Sabah and Sarawak are not the 12th and 13th states of Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak are equal to Malaya.

Can you now see where your destiny lies? Stop screaming and foaming at the mouth. It will get you nowhere. And you don’t even need to talk about getting out of Malaysia like what Singapore did. All you need to do is to vote in a state government that is independent of the federal government and you will automatically gain your independence.

My suggestion is for Sabah and Sarawak to become a third force, but one united third force (such as a North Borneo Alliance). You can, of course, enter into an electoral pact with Pakatan Rakyat if you want. In fact, this may actually be a good idea. Do what the LibDems in the UK did. They let Labour and Conservative fight it out and then they became the kingmaker.

Whether Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Rakyat forms the Federal government is not your worry. Your worry should be that Sabah and Sarawak are independent of both. Even if Pakatan Rakyat forms the federal government you still want to be free of federal domination. If you ‘belong’ to Pakatan Rakyat then you will not be too free to demand what belongs to Sabah and Sarawak.

That, in a nutshell, is my message to the voters of Sabah and Sarawak. And you better quickly get your act together because the next general election may be as early as next month and not later than June this year.

    7. MALAYA NEEDS OUR RESOURCES & VOTES MORE THAN WE NEED MALAYA!

RPK'S ATTEMPT TO PERSUADE US TO STAY IN MALAYSIA DOES NOT ADDRESS THE REAL GUTS ISSUES OF RE-COLONIZATION.

The main objective of RPK's article is to argue for the preservation the neo-colonial creation by Sabah and Sarawak not separating but to remain part of Malaysia.

He simply dismisses the calls for Sabah/Sarawak independence as foaming and frothing.

But what is clear is that without Sabah and Sarawak there will be no Malaysia.

Certainly some of his suggestion can be looked at - such as using our position to extract a "better deal" and to restore our independence rights supposedly provided for by the Malaysia Agreement.

      Is this what we want?

RPK's argument that we can be "independent states" within the federation only means at best a form of limited autonomy.

It is a contradiction to say we have independence when we are chained to the Malaysia concept which was originally the British plan to consolidate its rule in the post war period. But because of the Malaya and Borneo people's strong anti-colonial struggles the British had to revise their idea with a plan to hand over the colonial reins of power to its proxy UMNO which it had installed in power in 1957.

The rationales for creating Malaysia in 1963 such as the racial balance, foreign invasion etc no longer exist. The Malaysia idea collapsed with the departure of Singapore and the total failure of UMNO to keep promises made to entice Sabah/Sarawak people to support the Malaysia concept and UMNO's breach of the Malaysia agreement.

Even little Brunei could see the dangers of coming under Malayan rule and it stayed out. It does not have the colonial problems both Sabah and Sarawak have experienced for 48 years.

Both Sabah and Sarawak are richer in resources than Malaya. At present we have lost all control of our resources and destiny and kept dirt poor so Malaya can continue to dominate us. In fact UMNO has been draining out wealth for the development of Malaya.

What is blindingly clear is that if we are already so rich we do not need to be governed by a foreign government like Kuala Lumpur nor rely on it in any way to survive as an independent nation.

Malaya need our resources and as fixed deposits more than we need Malaya!

Sabah leaders have been asking this very question - Sabah and Sarawak can stand on their own and be totally self sufficient. We don't need Malaya's supervision of our lives.

The best course is to free ourselves, free Sabah and Sarawak for real independence!

We can stand alone and be independent from Malayan rule!

Do you mean Sabah & Sarawak become independent from Malay and merge? That was the proposal in the 1960s but the British forced us into Malaysia!

We can still get out of Malaysia and unite as one independent country or become separate independent states.

Malaya need our resources and votes more than we need Malaya!

  7. It makes me fill with lots of wonders on why suddenly and 'out of the blue sky' that RPK is encapsulated with so much emotions with Sabah and Sarawak.Worst still he sounds more like a master,a lecturer,a prof, telling and guiding his students on how to complete an assignment. This is very much a vain and revolting efforts that unwittingly spite the intelligence of right and able thinking Sabahans.

The point is can RPK be trusted after changing his stands on issues many times in the past? Why the sudden interests in Sabah and Sarawak?

Sabahans are fully capable on deciding their future. For good or bad it is entirely in their hands. If the majority feels that UMNO/BN is still their choice of government so be it.The outcome must be respected.Undue influence should not be exerted upon them.We don't need any history lessons from anyone because what happened in history is not always right. You can learn all the events from history but you cannot be certain and right on the thoughts and minds of leaders that are part of such events.Assumptions and pure guesses are sometimes being moulded into facts and repeatedly produced in history as to become pure facts. Its better therefore to focus on current and future or anticipated events that may or may not occure due to the occurance of present events. It is not that confusing,is it?

Allegations made against our CM is very much unfair. It is pure speculation and made in bad faith without any hard evidence to substantiate them. Its pure fabrication that are meant to ridicule the CEO of a State by an unscrupulous individual whose own character is so much tainted in many criminal accusations that he had to run and hide for foreign protection away from home.Only coward runs and wimp hides in the shadows of hell but is now spurting fires of hatred and revenge towards the innocence who put him there, the place where he rightfully belongs.

  12. When Malaysia was formed Tunku Abdul Rahman said (under Article 8 of the Malaysia Agreement 1963): "The granting of self-government too would enable Sabah to stand on its own feet as equal with Malaya, Sarawak and Singapore. The days of imperialism are gone and it is not the intention of Malaya to perpetuate or revive them. When the Borneo territories become part of Malaysia, they cease to be colonies, they will be partners of equal status..." (Sabah Times, Jesselton, August 30, 1963)

Indeed Sabah and Sarawak are not equal to the states of Malaya.

  14. READ THE LATEST COMMENT BY JOE FERNANDEZ ON THE MALAYAN COLONIZATION OF SABAH/SARAWAK!

And compare this with RPK's attempt at persuading us not to divorce Malaya!

    Excerpts from article:

"The sheer hypocrisy of Malaysia’s position on Palestine provides a glaring contrast with the fate of the Penan, for example, who are being hunted, pursued and chased out like animals from their traditional lands in Sarawak.

Other native landowners in Sabah and Sarawak have had their lands seized by Peninsular Malaysia -based plantation companies under one pretext or another.

"For starters, the two states in Borneo, it can be said, have been illegally occupied by Putrajaya since 1965, the year that Singapore was expelled from the then Malaysian Federation.

Malaysia, formed in 1963, then also consisted of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak.

Brunei had stayed out at the 11th hour over the federal government wanting 95% of the sultanate’s oil revenue on land and in the inner waters and 100% from the outer waters.

Putrajaya has been forcibly taking from Sabah and Sarawak, since 1976, what Brunei was not willing to concede in 1963.

    Oil agreement

Putrajaya has also been in non-compliance of the 1963 Malaysia Agreement under which Sabah and Sarawak came together with Malaya and Singapore to form the Federation of Malaysia.

The reason for the non-compliance, and hence illegal occupation of Sabah and Sarawak, is so simple it leaves one speechless and in a complete state of political, if not legal, paralysis.

The definition of federation in the post-Singapore Federal Constitution, unlike that in 1963, lists Sabah and Sarawak as two of the many states along with those in Peninsular Malaysia.

In 1963, Sabah and Sarawak, along with Singapore, were equals of Malaya.

In short, the so-called Federation of Malaysia of today is actually the Federation of Malaya which was quietly brought back in 1965 through the backdoor, after Singapore’s exit, to include Sabah and Sarawak as member states.

Sabah and Sarawak ceased to be members of the Federation of Malaysia in 1965 at the same time as Singapore. Instead of letting the Borneo states go at the same time, as demanded by then Sabah Chief Minister Donald Aloysius Marmaduke Stephens, Putrajaya bundled him soon thereafter into exile in Australia.

Stephens made a comeback as chief minister in 1976, this time as a Muslim (Mohd Fuad), but perished in a mysterious air crash hours after he refused to sign a controversial oil agreement with Petronas and the federal government.

Today, no one knows whether such an oil agreement exists. The official media reported in 1976, after Stephen’s death, that successor chief minister Harris Salleh signed the controversial oil agreement. If he indeed did, the Sabah state government should have a copy."

"With or without the oil agreement, the federal government and Petronas have no business robbing Sabah, Sarawak as well, of its oil and gas resources.

The daylight robbery is all the more brazen considering that the Federation of Malaysia, as constituted in 1963, ceased to exist in 1965 with Singapore’s departure, and what we have today is the old Federation of Malaya (1957-1963) masquerading as the Federation of Malaysia."

In the case of Sabah and Sarawak, what is the excuse that Putrajaya has to continue to occupy the two Borneo states and continue to keep them at the bottom of the dung heap as the poorest parts of the so-called federation?

This is a question which cries out for answers as much as the continuing plight of the Palestinians.

To add insult to injury, Putrajaya has been busy trying to create a fait accompli in Sabah by flooding the state with thousands of illegal immigrants who are also making their way into the electoral rolls.

In 2005, of the 3.2 million population in Sabah, only 1.5 million were locals, and the rest foreigners including illegal immigrants. Today, the population numbers some 3.5 million."

  25. RPK'S MISLEADING IDEAS

After carefully reading RPK's argument in his “Open Letter” with its overly mocking and patronising tone, one must conclude that it is extremely mischievous:

"However, if Sabah and Sarawak had opposition state governments -- like in Selangor, Kedah, Penang and Kelantan -- then Sabah and Sarawak will, again, be independent states although still members of the Federation or the United States of Malaya."

"Can you now see where your destiny lies? Stop screaming and foaming at the mouth. It will get you nowhere. And you don’t even need to talk about getting out of Malaysia like what Singapore did. All you need to do is to vote in a state government that is independent of the federal government and you will automatically gain your independence ".

This is just recycling the same 1960s British/ UMNO false promise of "independence in Malaysia" argument.

His logic is flawed and contradictory. He is saying that you can have "independent states although still members of the Federation..." (?!)

The aim of his argument is really " And you don’t even need to talk about getting out of Malaysia like what Singapore did."

In other words he is arguing that Malaysia is legitimate and that there is no Malayan colonization of Sabah and Sarawak.

The facts show that UMNO has colonized and plundered Sabah and Sarawak. We remained colonies and not until we throw out UMNO and any further Malayan rule whether under Pakatan we will never be free from foreign domination! That is what independence should mean!

RPK's argument may convince those who don't see through the trap in his logic!

Also you can pick up that he is mocking us in a very patronizing way!

We cannot put up with this type of behaviour which you can read in Malaysia Chronicle!

Strategically we can unite to end UMNO's 55 years domination of politics. But Pakatan may be no better as it has policy of ”integrating“ Sabah and Sarawak with Malaya. This is not in the Malaysia Agreement. Many Sabah/Sarawak people are saying it should have been an "equal partnership" whatever it means! As you can see we are still resisting integration!

Under a Pakatan government our resources will still be stripped and channeled to be used for Malayan "development".

Sabah and Sarawak annually contribute to at least 40% of the national budget for "development" from the local oil revenue and taxes. This converted to dollars would have been around $50 trillion over the last 48 years! But Sabah and Sarawak have become the poorest "states" in Malaysia. How do you explain this?

The above aspect was the major reason Brunei stayed out of Malaysia at the 11th hour!

The late Sultan of Brunei is now seen as a saviour of Brunei from UMNO colonialism!

We should all follow the example to the Brunei Sultan and unite to free Sabah and Sarawak for independence!

  27. KEJAYAAN MALAYA, KEHANCURAN SABAH

    menjadi sebuah negara bernama Malaysia.

Agak sedih kerana tanpa pengetahuan Sabah dan
Sarawak, Singapura sama ada dikeluarkan atau
menarik balik atau sememangnya telah bermain
wayang untuk memikat Sabah dan Sarawak supaya
bersetuju membentuk Malaysia kini menjadi satu

Kebanjiran pendatang asing mulai terasa.

    Tun Mustapha supaya USNO dimusnahkan.

Banyak
perkara berlaku untuk kepentingan Malaya di Sabah.

Kejayaan Malaya menjajah Sabah melalui UMNO dalan

    projek UMNO, berusaha mempertahankan UMNO.
    generasi bangsa Sabah.

  37. CigMA wants Sabah, Sarawak referred to UN
    Joe Fernandez
March 7, 2011 Free Malaysia Today

A human rights movement believes it is time United Nations rescued Sabah and Sarawak from the 'gross violations of human rights'.

KOTA KINABALU: An ad hoc apolitical human rights movement in Sabah wants to bring the “ambivalent” status of Sabah and Sarawak to the United Nations and place it before the international community for deliberation and final resolution. The NGO, Common Interest Group Malaysia (CigMA), feels that after nearly 50 years of Malaysia, “it must be clear by now that it cannot continue to be business as usual in Sabah and Sarawak”.

“Already, the federal government has been in non-compliance with the 1963 Malaysia Agreement,” CigMA co-chairperson Daniel John Jambun said in a talk entitled, “The root causes of poverty in Sabah, Sarawak exposed,” here over the weekend.

He identified the 11 major reasons for poverty in Sabah and Sarawak. They are:

    Proxy state governments;
    Under-representation in the Malaysian Parliament;
    Unfair revenue-sharing;
    Five percent oil revenue;
    No oil and gas infrastructure;
    No Borneonisation of the federal civil service;
    Adat ignored;
    Loss of the one federation, three territories status;
    Illegal immigrants on the electoral rolls;
    National Cabotage Policy; and
General non-compliance of the Malaysia Agreement.

Jambun was one of the seven speakers at an “Inter-party dialogue and leadership” seminar organised by the Borneo Heritage Foundation (BHF) in association with the ad hoc United Borneo Front (UBF).

The others were Jeffrey Kitingan, Nilakrisna James, Zainal Ajamain, Dr Chong Eng Leong, Amde Sidik, and Yong Teck Lee.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) adviser Simon Sipaun moderated.

Jambun said that non-compliance raised two questions, namely whether a compliance mechanism must be set up; or whether both Sabah and Sarawak should appeal to the international community and the United Nations.

The latter option, he said, “would be to facilitate the departure of the two states from the Malaysian Federation. Singapore (1965) is a precedent”.

    Compliance mechanism
Jambun said that it was unlikely that the Umno federal government, “obsessed with ketuanan Melayu” (Malay dominance and supremacy), would ever consider any compliance mechanism for the Malaysia Agreement or give justice, belated as it may be, to Sabah and Sarawak.

“This must be borne in mind by those who are currently flogging the Borneo Agenda with the hope that the federal government will come to its senses,” said Jambun in a reference to UBF’s agenda. “It (compliance) is a case of too little, too late.”

The departure of the British colonialists in 1963 saw the handover of the two Borneo states to new colonialists in Peninsular Malaysia, Jambun said, adding that “these are those who believe in the vile and racist master race policy of ketuanan Melayu”.

The ketuanan Melayu policy in Sabah and Sarawak, he added, was kept going by local proxies of the ruling elite in Putrajaya.

Furthermore, he opined, “these stooges of Putrajaya are traitors” who have allegedly participated in the colonial divide-and-rule policy of keeping the Chinese and majority non-Muslim natives out of the political mainstream and from the leverages of power.

    Part 2

Furthermore, he opined, “these stooges of Putrajaya are traitors” who have allegedly participated in the colonial divide-and-rule policy of keeping the Chinese and majority non-Muslim natives out of the political mainstream and from the leverages of power.

“To add insult to injury, they have willingly participated in the marginalisation and disenfranchisement of their fellow countrymen,” alleged Jambun.

This, according to him, was done through the placement of illegal immigrants on the local electoral rolls and the granting of MyKads through the backdoor by Putrajaya.

“What happened to the security promised us by federation in 1963?” asked Jambun. “This is one of the major reasons for grinding poverty in Sabah and Sarawak.”

He noted that the World Bank confirmed late last year that Sabah and Sarawak had achieved “the dubious distinction of bring the poorest and second poorest states in Malaysia”.

He wants to know whether both states agreed to federate together with Malaya and Singapore in 1963 to end up “at the bottom of the dung heap” along with the marginalised and disenfranchised elements of the third force in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Even more than the Chinese and non-Muslim natives communities, it’s the local Muslim native communities that are now feeling the brunt of marginalisation and disenfranchisement,” said Jambun. “They see their already small stake under Article 153 of the Federal Constitution being shared with the instant natives created from among the illegal immigrants.”

In Sabah, he noted, the local proxies of Putrajaya have now been dispensed with and Umno itself has struck roots to take half the seats in the state assembly and half the Sabah parliamentary seats.

He thinks that Umno invited MCA, MIC, Gerakan and the PPP along for company to mask their true intentions “and recently came up with the so-called 1Malaysia policy”.

This, in his view, “further ensures the continued enslavement of Sabah (and Sarawak)”.

    Gross violations
In Sarawak, meanwhile, Umno is poised to enter the state in the manner that it has done in Sabah, warned Jambun.

“This is to ensure that the majority Dayak community will never be able to rule their own state.”

Jambun said that it was time the United Nations rescued Sabah and Sarawak from the “gross violations of human rights taking place”.

He also wants the UN “to help restore our sovereignty and territorial integrity and guarantee our security”.

He added that something must be done, and done quickly, before the situation further degenerates into “an even greater vicious cycle of poverty, ignorance, disease and violence”.

Jambun said that the departure of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965 raised the question of whether the original federation of 1963 still existed or whether Sabah and Sarawak have been quietly incorporated as two of the states in the 1957 Federation of Malaya (now masquerading as Malaysia).

“This (1957) appears to be the case and must be considered seriously by our legal fraternity,” he said. “They should convey their views as well on this issue to the governments of Sabah, Sarawak, the federal government, the government of the United Kingdom and the United Nations.”
