Save Malaysia, implement "One Country, Two Systems"

KOTA KINABALU : We take to task Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha for saying Sabahans misread and misunderstood the country's cabotage policy in shipping transportation of goods. He is such in a denial attitude that he contradicts himself even to his Prime Minister Najib Razak's view on cabotage.

Since when did the Federal cancel the cabotage policy? Please show us the special announcement that there is no more cabotage policy. Don't just say it.

Even the Prime Minister said "we are considering (on reviewing cabotage), but here a minister said there is no cabotage, when this very cabotage policy had been strangling our economy in Sabah and Sarawak. Because of cabotage, cost of living is higher here, cost of transportation is higher and this has discouraged investors from coming to Sabah.

There is a delay cost, and so we lose, there is no profit, and as a result cost is raised much higher, and eventually burdening the local consumers, affecting adversely the poor people. It also makes our goods not competitive for export.

In the same breath I would like to challenge Najib if you really mean what you said that you are committed to the future of Malaysia as reported, then please implement the Malaysia Agreement, the 20 Points as the only way to save Malaysia is to respect the original concept of Malaysia and restore Sabah and Sarawak's position as equal partners in the Federation.

Furthermore, to save Malaysia will be to implement "one country, two systems" whereby a unitary system for the Malaya Federation and a federation system for Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya as equal partners.

    enough with the tea parties la jeffie Frog! stop hopping about and help the poor people instead of talking only and drink tea

    1. Jeffrey's UBF movement is good, but now Jeffrey has turn around and favor politics in Star, some 300 UBF activist are planning to leave UBF and rejoin BN. UBF has lost its direction due to politicking. Is Jeffrey our hope for transformation, I have my doubts of that.

PKR, they don't listen to him, he was jailed by the ISA for Sabah, others local leader sanggup ka buat ? as long as they are paid by current government, they will say ok ok ok ok even merugikan negeri sendiri. thats from my point of view la....

  3. The Federal Government might review the Cabotage system said FSM President Wong Ken Tau. Hopefully we will hear good news from the Prime Minister regarding this issue soon.

  4. Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha has denied giving inaccurate information to the people in Sabah regarding the Cabotage policy.

    1. In a statement, he said he understood the needs of Sabah people and the government had wanted a win-win situation for all stakeholders, particularly the people in Sabah.

    2. The minister added that the increase in prices of goods in Sabah said to be a result of the Cabotage policy is not true as there are other factors that contribute to the rising prices and among them are storage costs and the cost of port services..

    3. The Ministry of Transport has also denied the accusation that the Cabotage policy does not allow foreign ships to call at Sabah ports after unloading containers at the Peninsular port.

    4. According to the Cabotage policy does not prevent foreign ships from making direct call at any port in Malaysia from any port in the world. This means that after calling at Port Klang, the same ship can visit Sabah to unload and upload cargo before continuing its international destinations.

The claim that only certain shipping companies are allowed to transport transit containers between Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia is also untrue as the Ministry of Transport never gave special permission or specified only certain shipping companies could provide container services in Malaysia.

Apart from that, the government had already liberalised the Cabotage policy for the transportation of containerised transhipment cargo between Port Kelang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Sepangar Port on June 3, 2009. This means that foreign ships are free to transport transit containers from main vessels that berth in Peninsular direct to Sabah.

    7. In conclusion, any decision to import or export a container direct to or from Sabah is an independent business decision made by shipping company concerned. It has no direct connection with any policy or limitation set by the government.

    8. Importers and exporters are also free to choose any shipping service made available to them by any shipping company.

    9. There are several factors that shipping companies have to consider before deciding to make any port of call, such as quantity of cargo, total costs involved, delivery destinations and others.

    10. The Ministry of Transport has given information, clarification and feedback regarding this issue at forums organised in Sabah involving business associations, stakeholders including the Federation of Sabah Manufacturers.

  10. Jeffrey have so much money and land time PBS and when he was in power Yayasan Sabah. What has he done with the money?? organising tea parties and complain only!!

  24. the high costs of goods cannot be blamed solely on the cabotage policy without also referring to the total costs of transportation and logistics ashore including port costs and the high surcharges in Sabah.

    the low productivity at the ports in Sabah also adds towards additional shipping costs. freight is only one component which makes up 46% (from a study by Malaysian Shipowners Association) whilst others such as forwarding, trucking, storage etc make up the rest...
