Democracy Sabah enters fray to promote straight fights
KOTA KINABALU: A new group Democracy Sabah or Desah has been set up to promote a one-on-one fight between the main opposition parties and Barisan Nasional in the next general election.
Headed by former Sabah State Secretary Tan Sri Simon Sipaun, the group aims to promote straight contests as a step towards ensuring a two-party system in a state where crowded fields are seen in most elections.
“It is very confusing to the voting public. Many people are talking about the need for one-on-one contests and we have formed this ad hoc committee to promote the idea,” Sipaun said here yesterday.
Stressing that they were a non-partisan group, the former Suhakam vice-chairman said their immediate target was to work towards ensuring at least one-third of the 25 Parliament seats in the state were straight fights between the opposition parties and the ruling Barisan.
“It can be a free-for-all for the remaining seats as we don't think we have the time to cover all constituencies,” he said, adding that the 60 state seats would be left to the parties to iron out themselves.
Sipaun said he had spoken to leaders from the opposition who agreed to the idea but they seemed to have difficulty in convincing their members at the grassroots.
He said the proposal was to pre-select potential candidates through debate and door-to-door polling of 1,000 randomly selected voters in any constituency.
“It can be done, is economical and a professional method to choose the candidate,” he said, adding that parties in the pre-selection process would enjoy the backing of the public and community leaders.
Asked which were the opposition parties being considered, he said they were local-based Sabah Progressive Party and State Reform Party as well as the national-based PKR and DAP.
The national and local-based opposition parties in the state have been at loggerheads over seat-sharing although leaders have been publicly calling for seat talks.

It's high time that one to one fight in coming GE 13 is the only solution to fight against the BN. History has shown that ' united you stand & divide you fall'. By all means if the opposition parties are sincere, go for a straight fight in order to success to protect the rights and interests of all the State natural resources and the future generations of all Sabahans.
ReplyDeleteTan Sri Simon, I pray that you will success to lead such group to achieve such aim for the sake of the future generations in Sabah.
God bless you
Good effort if not be appreciated by opposition parties will be meaningless.
DeleteOto Tokou!
ReplyDeleteIf only they willing to put aside their political interests and go for one versus one fight. Too good to be true.
ReplyDeleteAlways difficult to unite and cooperate if each party is only concern of their own interests.
PKR has made way for SAPP, would SAPP make way for STAR if the chances for STAR is bigger?
ReplyDeleteUndi kepada pembangkang akan berpecah.
DeletePKR requested SAPP to step out on the Batu Sapi by-elections, but SAPP refused. However PKR is still willing to make way for SAPP this time round.
ReplyDeleteDAP now offering olive branch to SAPP, but will SAPP accept it?
DeleteSAPP and DAP will not co-operation with each other.
DeleteTRUE SABAH PATRIOT PUTS SABAH INTERESTS FIRST!
ReplyDeleteAgain Simon has demonstrated where his heart is - with Sabah. The MAIN OBJECTIVE is to throw out UMNO colonialism and take back our country Sabah.
If the oppositions continue to bicker about seat allocations and not unite firmly to regain control of Sabah, there will be no Sabah but a mini Indon/Philippine/Malaya (that is not Sabah!) country in 10 years time!
Sabah opposition leaders want to gain power for themselves but they must put Sabah first and formulate a plan so they can win seats for power.
Why can't they agree on a 50/50 (or proportional shares) sharing of seats to clear the log jam? This is best for Sabah as the seats can then be distributed between the 2 power opposition parties.
Just imagine when we can kick out UMNO we can move to the next stage of taking Sabah out of Malaysia!
Without Sabah and Sarawak there will be no Malaysia!
So make a sacrifice for Sabah...for its future!
Quoted:"Just imagine when we can kick out UMNO we can move to the next stage of taking Sabah out of Malaysia!"
DeleteAs Tan Sri may agree with challenge of fair election in Malaysia specially among many opposition parties stand not united to face BN election. He as Tan Sri still a good patriotic citizen may be who loves to see Sabah become a prosperous state also Malaysia.
You scum do not dirty his name by adding ideas or statement that may not be fair or find proper and could destroy many.
Which party are you from?Who's the president? If without proper way do not dream just because you like to for anything by talking about 'out of Malaysia'.You are too immature and behave like tyrant!
Malaya have already got 166 parliamentary seats but why try to grab the only 25 seats that belong to Sabah. We are trying to throw out UMNO and now we are again inviting party Malaya like PR. It is just like "keluar dari mulut harimau terus masuk ke mulut buaya". Sabahan must remember never surrender the Sabah,s right to the coloniser.
ReplyDeleteA new party enters the scene, how many more party do we need in one state? Too much clutter in here.
ReplyDeleteParti baru lagi, makin sengt la PRU13 nanti.
ReplyDeletePerpecahan pembangkang sangat menguntungkn BN. Bagus. Keep it up.
DeleteI can see BN still strong, not easy for opposition to defeat BN.
Deletebagus simon masuk saja ba berpolitik kalau sibuk mahu masuk campur urusan politik..
