EC and NRD want to clarify details of 129-year-old Sabahan

Abdul Aziz said state-based parties registered outside Sabah, such as the State Reform Party (STAR) of Sarawak can choose to contest in parliamentary seats in Sabah but not in state seats.

KOTA KINABALU: A 129-year-old Sabahan is listed in the electoral rolls. If he is still alive, he would be the country’s oldest eligible voter at the next polls.

The National Registration Department (NRD) and the Election Commission (EC) are checking on his status and want the next-of-kin of the man to step forward to verify if he is still alive.

“We are constantly cleaning up our database but there are too many people to keep track of.

This is how it goes: The EC simulating the voting process at the EC meeting with political party leaders and state media in Kota Kinabalu.

“It is impossible to have a 100% clean and updated database if everyone depends solely on us,” said EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

The case of the “oldest voter” is one reason for voters to update their personal information to avoid problems such as mistaken identities, Abdul Aziz told reporters after briefing political party representatives on the preparations here yesterday.

He advised voters to update their personal details with the NRD and EC by September, ahead of the next general election.

He said there had been complaints and media reports of voters being listed as dead or having the same names as others.

It was, therefore vital for all citizens to check on their personal information in the electoral rolls on details such as locality, name, gender and identity card number, either by calling the EC office or via the commission’s website.

Meanwhile, Abdul Aziz said state-based parties registered outside Sabah, such as the State Reform Party (STAR) of Sarawak can choose to contest in parliamentary seats in Sabah but not in state seats.

Asked about the setting of a Royal Commission of Inquiry on Sabah’s immigrant problem, he said the EC would extend its cooperation if required.

    3. First of all, I want to emphasize that UMNO is indeed Johor based. But it has Sabah address, so it is eligible to contest in Sabah. Plus, BN is under UMNO's umbrella, even UPKO, MCA, MIC..etc.
