STAR: Sabah, Sarawak should capitalize position as kingmakers
By Murib Morpi
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah and Sarawak should capitalize on their position as kingmakers in the coming general election to push for the right formula at federal level, said State Reform Party (STAR).
Its Sabah Chapter chairman, Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, said Sabah and Sarawak have the unique opportunity to reinstate themselves as independent nations and equal partners in the federation of Malaysia in accordance with the true spirit of the Malaysia Agreement.
“We need to leverage this for the good of the country, not for the party or for the good of individuals. I would like the leaders and the people to understand this. Don’t play around with the concept of kingmaker,” he said.
According to Jeffrey, although the two states were already kingmakers, in particular during the 2008 election, they have yet to capitalize nor benefit from this potential.
Even sadder, he said, a lot of people were not just suspicious but politicized the negative aspect of being the kingmaker.
He added that leaders in Sabah and Sarawak have been in the politics of ‘divide and rule’ for so long that most of them seemed no longer able to see beyond this particular arena.
“I notice that the leaders are unable to see things anymore, their mind is not thinking. So, it’s faster to get the people first, to get them to understand and then the leaders will catch up.
“If you begin with the leaders, first of all they will shut their mind, they are not receptive. That’s why we begin with the people, the young people especially, and from there we will be able to influence the leaders,” he said.
Sabah and Sarawak, he stressed, must appreciate and fully leverage their potential as kingmakers come the election to regain their status as equal partners with Malaya.
Towards this, he said the people in Sabah and Sarawak should understand that this time around they have to unite outside the existing political frame controlled by peninsular-based parties.
The people, he said, must start to think outside the box to take charge of their future in Malaysia.
“Inside the box of Barisan, Umno controls you and inside the box of Pakatan Rakyat, PKR may control you. So we need to be outside the boxes; we want to be independent to make our own stand and to work with them, not under them.
“This means that if we have a choice, we should choose the right one, the right one being those who restore our rights, give back our oil and solve our problems.
“If both of them are 50-50, both of them offer the same thing, we would choose for change, most likely Pakatan, to work with them not subservient but equal partners to change the country,” he said.
He said Sabah and Sarawak should push for more parliamentary seats to have more decision making power in parliament as currently we are at a disadvantage with about two-thirds of parliamentary representation currently concentrated in Peninsular Malaysia.
“It is so unfair now. For example, Keningau, my area, is almost 4,000 sq km. I can put three Semenanjung states, namely Perlis, Penang and Malacca inside Keningau with still plenty of room left, ‘longgar lagi’.
“But Keningau is only one parliamentary seat, two DUN, one district officer while in the three states on the other hand, there are 83 DUN, 26 parliamentary seats, three Menteris Besar, two Sultans and one governor.
“If it is not even fair to compare the three states with Keningau, how do you imagine the whole Sabah being compared to say Perlis? The service in Sabah is the same as in Perlis because they regard Sabah as just one of the 13 states.
“So, this is what I mean we need to do justice to Sabah. Don’t downgrade Sabah. Sabah is equal to the whole Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, not just the states in Peninsular,” he said.
In this regard, he said it was also important for the people to understand why Pakatan or other Semenanjung-based parties should concentrate in Peninsular Malaysia and leave Sabah seats to local parties.
“National parties must give a chance to local parties to contest seats meant to represent Sabah and Sarawak, otherwise it would mean they are not sincere in respecting the autonomy of the two states.
“They already have 165 parliamentary seats to contest, about 75 per cent of what is available. In Sabah there are only 25 seats. Why do you want everything?
“We don’t want them to operate in the same manner like Umno in the name of national politics, you want to grab everything for your own agenda.
“We want genuine cooperation, working side by side as partners, not as subservient partner but equal partner,” he said.

ngam sangat ngam tetapi menjadi kingmaker juga boleh dilakukan selepas UMNO dan BN kalah.org sabah mesti sedar ini dan bukan bermaksud saya tidak menyokong bahawa Sabah dan Sarawak perlu lebih ramai wakil parlimennya.tetapi saya cadangkan dr jeffry utk membuatnya satu persatu kerana masalah ini telah lama berlaku dan tentunya perlukan strategi yg tepat.benarkan Pakatan dan UBF menang dulu di Sabah kerana kami mahukan UMNO dan BN out from the state. We don't want this UMNO leaders from Semenanjung control us and making us like a fool.Kalau org UMNO cakap Sabah ni fixed deposit saya bukan melihat fixed deposit itu sebagai bilangan ahli parlimen yg menyokong tetapi kandang tempat menternak dan melahirkan PATI sesuka hati. Dulu Sabah aman damai, kini menjadi parah kerana sikap pentingkan kuasa org2 federal.
DeletePandai cakap saja.entah-entah akedemik kau cuma tidak lulus PMR. Cuba huraikan maksudkan kau Jeffrey susun satu persatu?
DeleteKita mahu UMNO out from Sabah .... bagaimana dengan Pakatan .. ( adakah kita mahu pakatan ganti UMNO ) keluar mulut buaya masuk mulut naga ...
ReplyDeletePakatan is also a Semenanjung based party.
DeleteNo Party can be worse than Umno! No coalition can be worse than BN!
DeleteIf PR can topple BN we'll take it any day! Not a day longer under UMno/BN. It can't get any worse, people!
kalau tiada peninsular based party di Sabah, macam mana agaknya keadaan Sabah ni??
DeleteOh.. Rakyat Sabah terpaksa melawan parti PATI lah.
BN tetap terbaik.
DeleteKadang orang tempatan 'jual' orang sendiri..ini mahu harapkan pihak luar untuk 'bela' kita? Habislaaaa
DeleteJeffrey insulted the late Donald Stephen and Mustapha Harun as amateurs in politics because they are not highly educated like him. So what if Donald Stephen only finish form 5 and Mustapha only completed Primary six? Why did Jeffrey make these sort of statement? Hope he will clear the air.
ReplyDeleteIT IS ONLY THE TRUTH TO ILLUSTRATE THAT THEY DID NOT POSSESS THE POLITICAL KNOW HOW!
DeleteMUCH AS WE RESPECT PAST LEADERS FOR THEIR EFFORTS AND INTEGRITY, THEY WERE NO MATCH FOR THE SLICK UMNO MALAYAN SNAKE OIL DEALERS!
STEPHENS HAD TO TAKE THE LEAD FROM LEE KUAN YEW WHICH LEFT SABAH AND SARAWAK HIGH AND DRY WHEN LKY TOOK S'PORE OUT OF M'SIA & LEFT THEM IN THE SNAKE PIT!
Education has served when it is used. Finishing Primary Six was a big deal when it was considered as such. There was a time when ten-cent worth a lot. This may not be a traditional notion. I've quite forgotten the yesteryear of learning economics. When money was at its novelty (contrast it to barter trading that was inconvenient) it facilitated a lot of things (didn't have to pull a buffalo everywhere to exchange for cooking pots, for example). So, it was only natural that people placed a lot of value on money than the things it could buy. Money chose. Now money is abound as well as goods. Both are at par with each other. We have more choices. If some of us now are still around when people start inhabiting Mars they'll say 'earth problems'.
DeleteLet's talk in the now. Let us support efforts for rectification.
RECTIFICATION THROUGH INDEPENDENCE IS THE ONLY SOLUTION...
DeleteFOR A BETTER & DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF SABAH!
Saudara, baca baik-baik kenyataan Dr.Jeffrey tu.Samada kenyataan Dr.Jeffrey ada unsur menghina atau sekadar menceritakan perkara sebenar kepada mantan pemimpin berkenaan.Budak-budak pun faham benar kenyataan Dr.Jeffrey tu.hs.sook
ReplyDeleteJeffrey said We want genuine cooperation, working side by side as partners, not as subservient partner but equal partner.
DeleteIf they all cooperate to work together for this election, I doubt if they will agree when it comes power dividing process.
DeleteMy understanding is that Pakatan 'kacau daun' in Sabah. It is no different from UMNO/BN. They all think they can run better. They can talk better. They can manage better. Is it so difficult to understand that Sabah is supposed to be a partner. Malaya should not act like a mother-in-law(mil) from hell. Controlling her son/daughter's every movement even after the said offspring's marriage. The other side of the coin is that daughter/son -in-law of the mil is just her tool. That's how she would want to (think) groove them. Heck! Please don't even think of running other people's lives. Before giving me the brickbats, I'm reminding myself too (for future behavior)
ReplyDeleteContinue with educating the young Dr Jeffrey. Sabah had a History book. Though I'm not sure exactly what was in it. It should be revived if it tells the truth. It is suffocating to live a lie. The truth should be given light. If it's not already self-explaining. People tend to be a creature of comfort.
DeleteSABAH SARAWAK ONLY "COMFORT WOMEN" FOR MALAYAN UMNO!
ReplyDeleteIt would be more accurate to say Sabah and Sarawak were forced to become "comfort women" for Malayan colonialism which raped and looted the 2 colonies for 49 years to develop Malaya and enrich the likes of Mahathir and cronies!
Why bother with "equal partnership" when we can be better off independent and richer (because they keep their wealth) like Brunei and Singapore. They were lucky to escape the clutches of the Malayans who had a colonisation agenda.
Now that we know. Blind-trust, it was not. Wide awake, I partially believe. Yet, we are cornered. Time to get the grey matter working to its full capacity. The Jews are smart because they had to hone their brains to survive. Possible to be wishful but don't give up. I am connecting my wish to the universe.
DeleteWhatever we think of Israel as a rip off of Palestine we got to give them credit for survival....
DeleteCakap senanglah tapi siapa yang mahu buat betul2? Mimpi ke bintang...
ReplyDeleteMacam orang lain bilang, cakap hanya membuang liur tapi bila sampai untuk bekerja satu titik peluhpun tidak keluar.
Deletebercakap memang senang..rakyat perlu berhati-hati ketika membuat pilihan kelak.
DeleteSTAR has yet to have any result to proven their capabilities to strike the best for the people in Sabah.
DeleteMy dear Friends Sabahans and Sarawakians time and time again, them the semananjungs has been fooling us, by making us envious of each others and those who tries hard to point to us WHO we should be In MALAYSIA,let us just search our heart and PRAY To The ALMIGHTY ( Whatever your religion is ) for interference that we could VOTE only THE BEST,As for me I believe we should only VOTE for SABAH BASED PARTIES........
ReplyDeleteWishful thinking for now. Once Sabah thinks on her (country has traditionally a feminine gender) own feet, magic is not impossible. It's a matter of focus. Pandelela is ahead. She has earned a bronze already. She is aiming for silver in 2016 Olympics. Freedom for Sabah.
ReplyDeleteFREEDOM = INDEPENDENCE

What is the story about Daniel?
To me, he is quite balanced. His views are points full. He wrote a very enlightening article about the PATI in Sabah. Quote : No passage of time, even over generations, will whitewash an illegality and make it legal. Unquote . I don' t know how he could possibly 'cucuk hidung dan tarik' Daniel. Tarik pergi ke mana?
DeleteLet see whether the people will support and give chance to STAR ?
ReplyDeleteJeffrey has great impact in Sabah too.
ReplyDeleteDr. Jef memang okay, kalau kamu tak kenal dia memang susah buat keputusan.
ReplyDeleteSELAMAT BERJUANG....!!
YAKINLAH DENGAN PEMIMIPIN KITA....!!!
HIDUP..HIDUP... HIDUP RAKYAT....................!!!!!!!!!!!
Sokong penh perjuangan STAR . Semoga berjaya
ReplyDeleteMenyokong penuh perjuangan STAR. Semoga berjaya
Deletetidak menyokong perjuangan Star.
DeleteSebab-sebabnya?
DeleteMampus..mahashit...
ReplyDeletemampus..umno..
mampus..musa..amam..
JK..is..the..best>>>>
As long as the party sincere to bring the better future, indeed a right choice to vote.
ReplyDeleteTengok la lepas PRU13, macam mana
ReplyDeleteNo story abt Daniel. Dont know why JK still want to keep him. Asked to pengerusi penganjur Sabah independence celebrations and he keep pushing to others to do. He cant even organise a meeting. In the end, someone else had to do it. Star will not progress with such people hanging around.
ReplyDeleteDivision of labor? Delegating? Giving others opportunities to learn the 'rope ' , show some mettle? On tight schedule with BoPiMaFo Trust set up in UK to launch a class action lawsuit?
DeletePenyokong buta. Tiada kebolehan jangan kasi alasan yg temberang. Tinguk nanti BoPiMaFo jadi Boleh Pigi Makan Foochow mi.
DeleteSicelik ketengahkanlah dirimu itu. Inilah peluang. Jangam duk bantai saje
DeleteBARISAN NASIONAL IS THE BEST! Kamu tengoklah nanti. Pengundi@penyokong setia BN banyak maaa... pakatan mau buat macam mana pun tetap menang. Conform PRU 13 ni nanti BN sapu semua kerusi 100% menang tanpa tanding. Cakap sajalah, kalau mulut kamu tu saja besar tapi biji kemaluan kecil sebelah.
Jangan cakap kalau mau periuk sentiasa penuh.
ReplyDeleteSemua sabahan mesti bersedia terima keputusan untuk sedia angkat kaki atau jadi pengemis kalau ada orang baru PATI mau tinggal jadi bumiputera dan buat tanah sabah jadi tanah tumpah darah mereka. Kalau misi BN tercapai 100% orang sabah terutamanya yang bumiputera kehidupan mereka akan bertambah mewah. Betul bah itukan!
ReplyDelete
