Azmin: Sabah RCI testimony proves Dr M a traitor
Allegations of a ‘citizenship-for-votes’ scheme heard at the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) on Sabah immigrants yesterday proves former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad is a traitor to the country, said PKR.
“We are following the developments and witness testimonies closely; several shocks have emerged, names have been named, and these are not surprising to us,” said PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.
“We truly understand this represents a planned effort headed by the then prime minister (left), and to me he is a traitor to the country for given identity cards (IC) to foreigners just to shore up Umno’s political power,” he said at a press conference at PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.
Yesterday, several former National Registration Department (NRD) officers told the RCI in Kota Kinabalu that they were instructed to facilitate immigrants to vote during the 1990s and help install a BN-friendly state government.
These operations ranged from issuing IC receipts of existing voters to immigrants to issuing blue identity cards to unqualified immigrants.
When contacted for comment, EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said he would seek further information from his officers on what was said at the RCI before responding to the claims.

ReplyDeleteFormer prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad has admitted that Malaysian identity cards (IC) were issued to immigrants in Sabah under his administration.
ReplyDeleteHe however denied that the project was illegal as all procedures were according to laws enacted under the federal constitution.
DeleteMahathir, who was premier from 1981 to 2003, said he is willing to testify at the ongoing Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Illegal Immigration in Sabah if called, but said no one has called him yet.
Delete"I admit that I gave (citizenship) during my time," he told a press conference after giving a speech at the Karangkraf headquarters here today.
DeleteThe 87-year-old statesman did not disclose the number of citizenship cards given out, or the official name of the project which has come to be known as "Project IC".
DeleteMahathir claimed that the country's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, gave one million citizenship cards to immigrants in Peninsular Malaysia after Independence in 1957.
Delete"Tunku Abdul Rahman is worse than me. He gave one million citizenship without proper tests and checks. But no one talks about it," he said.
Delete"It is their (immigrants') right once they become citizens. It is their right to support whoever they choose, whether BN (Barisan Nasional) or anyone," he added.

Delete"They should not react emotionally towards statements made by witnesses day-by-day, but look at the context of the RCI as a whole when all 160 witnesses called will have testified at the hearings," he said today.
He expressed concern that the speculations can be easily politicised by certain parties as the 13th general election is approaching.
