Bumburing's now locked inside PR and the key is outside

KOTA KINABALU - Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said the door for discussion on state-federal seats ratio with Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is still open.

SAPP Youth Chief Edward Dagul said his party supports President Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee's stand that Sabah-based parties must contest the majority of seats in the state legislative assembly to put an end to the state being a puppet administration.

He said it is in line with SAPP's struggle to form a state government with autonomy as enshrined in the 1963 Malaysia Agreement.

"SAPP is willing to relent to PR contesting a majority of the state's parliamentary seats, allowing the federal opposition pact a better chance to claim power in Putrajaya.

"However, administrative power over the state must stay in the hands of parties with roots in Sabah," he said.

On reports that seat talks between SAPP and PR have come to temporary halt according to PR ally Datuk Seri Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing, Dagul said, "Our party was waiting for PR to decide on its own seat sharing formula among its three parties, Bumburing's Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS) and Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin's Pertubuhan Pakatan Perubahan Sabah (PPPS)."

"The door for discussion is still open. It could be that Bumburing's now locked inside PR and the key is outside," added Dagul.

He said SAPP have repeatedly stated that the coming 13th General Election is about restoring the autonomy of Sabah as well as Sarawak as promised in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the spirit of the formation of Malaysia.

Dagul also said that Pakatan's Kuching Declaration that says Sabah and Sarawak have equal status as Malaya is relevant.

Key among the seven-point declaration was a pledge to restore the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement and the position of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners within Malaysia, "by restoring autonomy to Sarawak and Sabah within the framework of the Federal Constitution".

"Consistent with these promises and principles, local parties should contest a majority of state assembly seats," he pointed out.

Both Bumburing and Lajim were former strongmen in Sabah BN but left their respective parties UPKO and Umno last year to form the two PR-friendly political NGOs.

"SAPP are waiting for PR or PKR to make their formula official and to announce it because we are accountable not only to our parties but also to the rakyat.

"We would also like to know the formula for Sarawak and for Malaya as well," he added.

Dagul added that prior to forming APS, Bumburing was Chairman of Amanah Sabah, an NGO headed by Gua Musang Member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

He said the official launching of Amanah Sabah was also attended by Datuk Ong Tee Keat (Deputy President) Datu Amir Kahar Tun Mustapha (Deputy President), Tan Sri Simon Sipaun (Vice President) and Mohd Lukhman Ghani (Vice President).

Veteran politicians like former Chief Minister Datuk Osu Sukam, Lajim Ukin, Datuk Mijul Mahap and Datuk John Ghani were also linked to Amanah.

Wiramuda (Youth) Parti Reformasi Negeri (Star) Sabah mempersoalkan apakah sebenarnya peranan Datuk Seri Wilfred Bumburing dalam bersekongkol dengan PKR; tetapi tidak pula menyertai terus parti Semenanjung itu.

    1. Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) seat talks with the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) have come to a temporary halt, PR ally Datuk Seri Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing has said, in yet another indicator that it may be a fractured opposition front that will face Barisan Nasional (BN) in Election 2013.

      Delete
    2. On the outset, leaders from both sides have put on nonchalant fronts, each claiming that their “doors are always open” but the drama behind closed doors appears to be showing otherwise.

      Delete
    3. According SAPP information chief Chong Pitt Fah, his party chief Datuk Yong Teck Lee had told a Sunday press conference in Sabah that seat talks with PR have yet to come to a deadlock.

      Delete
    4. But when queried on the progress of the negotiation recently, ex-BN strongman Bumburing claimed the opposite.

      Delete
    5. In as far as SAPP [is] concerned, Pakatan [is having] difficulty in accommodating the number of seats that they demand and it seems that seat nego (negotiation) with them [has] come to a halt as of now.

      Delete
    6. understands that PR is unwilling to cede seats to the Sabah-based SAPP despite its claim to have greater appeal with locals in the east Malaysian state, insisting that theirs is a more Chinese-dominated party.

      Delete
    7. “The strength of SAPP used to be limited in the town areas. Now the Chinese voters are putting their support to DAP to fight for their rights,” Bumburing said.

      Delete
    8. “SAPP is mainly a Chinese-based party… so who would represent the KDMs (Kadazandusun and Murut)? Of course they claim they are a multiracial party…. but then again, their base is Chinese,” he said.

      Delete
    9. Azmin said that SAPP’s first demand to contest in a whopping 40 of the state’s 60 seats was too unreasonable as it would leave the remaining opposition parties just 20 seats to share among themselves.

      Delete
    10. “Initially, they wanted 40 seats, and that is not acceptable to PKR, because we have PAS, DAP, APS, PPPS… we must all work together.

      Delete
    11. “Then they said they were willing to reduce their numbers but the final figure, the most they could concede was just about five seats… again, that is still very big,” he said.

      Delete
    12. He acknowledged SAPP’s argument that the contest for Sabah should be among locals but said the “Sabah for Sabahans” war cry was “no longer applicable after over 50 years of independence”.

      Delete
    13. Even though PKR, DAP and PAS are national parties, we also include our friends in Sabah and Sarawak. “We believe in this autonomy for Sabah and Sarawak but that does not mean that PR cannot contest in Sabah — every single one of our candidates are Sabahans,” he pointed out.

      Delete
    14. But observers believe that SAPP is an important component in PR’s struggle for Sabah as without the party on their side, the opposition’s contest could result in three- or even four-cornered fights, which would split the opposition vote and give BN its much needed edge.

      Delete
    15. Azmin said SAPP initially wanted to contest a whopping 40 of the state’s 60 seats, leaving the remaining opposition parties just 20 seats to share among themselves.

      Delete
    16. “If SAPP and STAR stay outside of Pakatan there is some concern from the voters. How we know their strength and we believe that in the GE13, the voters will only have a choice between Pakatan and BN,” Bumburing said, agreeing.

      Delete
    17. But he added that both parties would likely be on yet another collision course when trying to divide seats among themselves as either side believes they should take the lion’s share. “If both parties are unwilling to concede majority state seats to Pakatan, then I cannot see how they could concede to each other.

      Delete
    18. The respective leaders of SAPP and STAR are well known for being ambitious,” he said, referring to Jeffrey and Yong.

      Delete

The fact that both Lajim and Bumburing are not together in one organisation shows that one is a proxy and the other is his stooge. Lajim, as the proxy, is Bumburing's master. Bumburing, as Lajim's stooge, is his slave.
