KOTA KINABALU - A two-hour downpour caused flash floods at housing estates and industrial zones in low-lying areas of the state capital.
Water levels rising up to 0.5m flooded homes, shops and main roads into housing estates in various areas including Luyang, Likas, Kolombong, Inanam, Menggatal and parts of Penampang during the heavy rain that started at around 1pm yesterday.
However, by 4pm water in most areas began subsiding and many residents started to clean up their homes.
Shop assistant Dailin Rasid said the water entered his premises very fast, adding that they hardly had any time to move their things to higher ground.
“It started at about 1pm and by 3pm, water gushed into our sundry shop,” he said, adding that not many things were damaged as previous experience had taught him to stack things up properly.
An affected house owner, who identified herself as Lin, said the floodwaters swept rubbish from outside into her living room. “Now we have to clean up and it is really causing a lot of inconvenience and has spoiled our day,” she added.
A Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman said they received reports from various areas but there were no requests for evacuations or any casualties.
A Meteorological Department spokesman said the rains triggered by a tropical depression in the South China Sea was expected to ease by today.
