KENINGAU - Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS) Keningau has urged the Government to hold a democratic election to fill the vacancy for the post of Kg Tuarid Liawan village chief after the appointment of the incumbent candidate was withdrawn.
APS Chairman Paul Kadau (pic) said he wanted the post of Village Chief to be appointed through a public election and not otherwise.
Paul said it was better that the people of the area be given the opportunity to choose their leaders at the village level who are perceived to have good leadership and experience in the customs of the village.
"After the appointment of the incumbent candidate Arkan Tingguan was withdrawn without a reason , until now Kg Tuarid Liawan did not have a village chief and this has been the question on the people's minds.
"With regard to the appointment of Robert Gajim to fill the vacancy the Liawan Assemblyman denied he was there to support him ... in any case the villagers will reject the appointment of Robert if it is carried out. "If this is the situation, I feel it is better to have an election so the villagers can choose a leader who really received the support of the people," he said.
According to Paul, he was made to understood that there was a meeting of the Kg Tuarid, Village Development and Security Committee in November, 2014 which was attended by the Local Community Leader for Liawan which announced the withdrawal of the appointment of incumbent village chief and his replacement was Robert.
However, the selection of Robert encountered fierce resistance from villagers and it was understood the Liawan Assemblyman also denied ever giving support for the selection of Robert.
However, efforts to contact the Liawan Community Development Leader Unit Office to verify the matter failed because it was a weeked.
In the meantime, Paul, who is also Vice President of APS said, it was time that the appointment system of village chiefs be abolished by the Government where it does not seem appropriate and is not based on the trust of local villagers.
