Police: Stop spreading false information about abduction

KENINGAU - The alleged abduction of several students has started to spread in the social media again and this prompted the police in the district to advise the people to stop spreading false information.

District police chief DSP Douglas Taong said spreading false information through WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook could cause anxiety and fear among the public.

“This is the work of irresponsible people who wanted to intimidate the public, especially when the new school session has just started,” he said in response to rumors of the abduction of students that was being spread in the social media.

Douglas said the alleged abduction was first brought to the attention of the authorities on October 21 last year, where it had been investigated and was found to be just false news.

“After the case was being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code at the time, this was denied by the Sabah Police Commissioner through the media,” he said.

He advised the people to stop spreading information that had been confirmed as false as this could cause a lot of trouble to the people themselves.

“As those responsible for public safety, we want the people to always live in safe and secure conditions. Stop spreading rumours and false information immediately,” he said.
