KUALA LUMPUR - Prominent deputy public prosecutor Kevin Anthony Morais was abducted in broad daylight at a busy road here about 7.30am on Friday.
Based on closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) recordings at a highway several kilometres from Morais’ home in Menara Duta Apartment, police believe between three and four men had tailed the lawyer before striking.
“From CCTV recordings, the abduction took place during the morning rush hour.
“The abductors followed Morais in another car and waited until he slowed down because of heavy traffic.
“Several of them then approached the Proton Perdana that Morais was driving before forcing him out of the car and taking him into their vehicle,” a source told the New Straits Times.
It is learnt that while Morais was being taken into the abductors’ vehicle, one man got into the victim’s Proton Perdana before both vehicles were driven away.
When asked whether police knew where Morais was taken and if they had identified the abductors, sources said the details were still under investigation.
What is puzzling investigators is that while the incident took place on a busy road, no road users have come forward to help the probe.
“A number of drivers must have witnessed the abduction. But so far, no one has lodged a report or relayed any information to police.
“We hope anyone who saw the incident will come forward as even the smallest detail might help investigators move forward in the probe to find out what happened to Morais.”
The source said anyone with information could contact the nearest police station or the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.
It was reported that Morais, who is the deputy head of the Appellate and Trial Division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers, was last seen leaving his apartment on the way to his workplace in Putrajaya on Friday morning.
Sources told the NST that police had reviewed CCTV footages from both public- and private-owned cameras along possible routes and toll plazas that Morais might have taken.
Investigators were said to be reviewing the files of all the cases that Morais prosecuted and would call in suspects in the cases to facilitate the probe.
