Central Bank governor assures the people that if there are irregularities in 1MDB, it will be uncovered as there is nowhere to hide now.
KUALA LUMPUR - Apart from local ongoing investigations on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the international community is also conducting their own investigations and should there be any financial irregularities detected, it will be uncovered, the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), Zeti Akhtar Aziz assured Malaysians.
She said this at a panel discussion at the Economic Update forum organised by the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) yesterday.
“In this day and age, it must be known that there is no place on this planet that anyone can actually hide because the world has come together.
“They will come together to track down any irregular type of activities. So, that is where we are now,” she was quoted by The Sun Daily as saying.
She said that to this end an international task force called the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) had been formed to deal with incidences of anti-money laundering and that actions would be taken by the international community if any irregularities were detected.
She said the FATF had greatly strengthened regulations and standards after events related to terrorist financing.
“They will come to every country to make an assessment, whether we implement the standards that they have set and whether we enforce these standards.
“Malaysia has already had our assessment and we came out quite well, actually, in terms of whether we comply with these standards but they would like to see further enforcement.”
The Central Bank governor also added she was aware that the public wanted answers and that local agencies such as the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission were conducting investigations on this end while BNM had already concluded theirs and had handed in their findings to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
