he said news reports are meant to inform the public of current affairs with accuracy, simplicity and objectively.
"Newspapers are set up to inform, to provide commentary and to entertain...it helps readers to keep abreast with the facts, statistics and opinions," he said.
Li said newspapers are also a platform for the masses to express their thoughts on issues and thus, could not understand why Wong demanded the Daily Express to issue an open apology.
Wong, through his lawyer, recently issued a letter of demand for the Daily Express to issue an open apology or face legal action of RM10 million over his rift with former deputy Fred Fung Kong. Fung had allegedly issued a statement calling on Sabah DAP to come clean on the amount received for quake victims.
The statement also alleged that some party members had misused or pocketed a large sum from the election funds several years ago.
Wong, meanwhile, claimed that most of the election funds received were banked into Fung's account, as the party did not have its own account at that time. He added that the funds were handled by the treasurer as well as Fung, and their lawyer.
Towards this end, Li said Daily Express was merely giving Fung the room to say his side of the story, while at the same time being fair to Wong by publishing all his response and statements.
"Then why should Wong summon Daily Express? Why only Daily Express when all the other papers also published the statements of both Wong and Fung?" he asked.
