Bus Crash: 13 Bodies At Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital

KUALA LUMPUR - The remains of 13 Malaysians in the tragic bus crash in Chiang Mai are at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand, Datuk Nazirah Hussin said nine other Malaysians injured in the incident were being warded at various hospitals including Bangkok Hospital in Chiang Mai.

"One of the seriously injured underwent operation. The identity will be disclosed later," she said in a statement, here, Monday.

According to an international news report, the bus carrying 22 Malaysians skidded after hitting a pickup truck on the way from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai.

Nazirah said the victims' next-of-kin had been informed of their whereabouts and were now on their way to Chiang Mai.

She also released the list of Malaysians involved in the accident, as follows:

Chiang Mai crash: Bus driver was speeding to escape vehicle he had hit


The bus driver involved in the tour bus crash that caused the death of 13 Malaysian tourists was speeding in an attempt to escape from a vehicle he had earlier hit.

Chiangrai Times quoted Thai police as saying that the bus driver had noticed the driver of the vehicle he hit earlier was following him and he started speeding and driving recklessly.

The police went on to say that the bus hit a car and then slammed into a power pole before plunging over an embankment.

The police also said they had the bus driver in custody and he is being tested for alcohol and drugs, adding that he could be charged for reckless driving causing death and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Fifteen family members of Malaysian victims in the the tour bus tragedy which occurred in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand on Sunday afternoon left for Bangkok at 1pm today.

Chiu Travel Sdn Bhd general manager Terence Yung said the group from Batu Pahat had taken a Thai Airways flight at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Bangkok and a 5pm flight to Chiang Mai.

"They are from seven families who will identify the victims.

"Three of our staff will accompany them to process the death certificates and bring home the remains," he told reporters when met early today.

The 15 family members left Batu Pahat for KLIA at 5am in a van with two company staff.
