Esscom: Claims of pirate presence in Sandakan untrue

KOTA KINABALU: A viral voice message in Malay claiming that pirates are in Sandakan has been dismissed as fake by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom).

"No such incidents. It is a fake,'' said its commander Datuk Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid Wednesday in response to the messages that have been going viral since late Tuesday.

Wan Bari said that there was no truth to the viral message and also dismissed claims that security forces were carrying out operations in the area under Esscom's watch.

Various voice messages claimed that pirates were in Sandakan, and another claimed that they were moving towards Lahad Datu.

Wan Bari urged people to stop forwarding such messages and said that the situation was under control and there was no cause for panic.

He said they could also check with the Esscom Operations Centre 089-863181 to seek more information on such matters.
