Morshidi told the portal that he received his appointment letter and would now represent Sarawak in the national oil company’s board which presently has 15 members.
“As a board member representing Sarawak, my job is to bring back anything that needs further discussion to the state government.”
The appointment of a Sarawakian to the Petronas board is one of seven-points agreed between Putrajaya, Petronas and the Sarawak government in August.
The seven point agreement came in the wake of discontent in Sarawak over Petronas’ lack of prioritisation of Sarawakians in the company’s operations in the state.
This subsequently led to a freeze of work permits of Petronas workers from Peninsular Malaysia.
Chief Minister Adenan Satem then inked the seven-point agreement, which stated, among others, that a Sarawakian would be appointed to the Petronas board of directors.
The other points included Sarawakians filling the 192 vacancies in Petronas operations in Sarawak, 50 placements for Sarawakians in University Technology Petronas, the intensification of technical training for Sarawakians in Petronas training centres and that Petronas support Sarawak’s petrochemical industries.
The other points were that Putrajaya and Petronas consider Sarawak’s participation in Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) and that Petronas would increase the number of Sarawakians at the management level from the current 33 per cent to 60 per cent.
