KOTA KINABALU - Barisan Nasional/UMNO should view their
victory in the Kimanis by-election as the people's rejection of the
Government's questionable policies, in particular the controversial Sabah
Temporary Pass (PSS), said Jamain Sarudin, chairman of Solidarity Rakyat Sabah (SORAK).
He also advised BN/UMNO not to ignore the role of NGOs that
indirectly contributed to their victory through the anti-PSS campaign.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Jamian said the anti-PSS campaign
mounted by SORAK and like-minded NGOs had succeeded in swinging the Kimanis
voters to vote against Warisan, the main advocate for PSS.
"Should there be a three-corner fight in the recent
Kimanis_by-election, Warisan might have won because of split votes among the opposition,
BN and non-BN voters.
"Although our Sabah NGOs (PIPA and SORAK) took a minor
role in the by-election, we have gone through various obstacles, threats,
accusations and attempts to thwart our plans.
"We even received fish bomb threats. However, such threats
did not deter us from organising the peaceful rally as planned," he said.
He added that even the by-election is now over, SORAK and
its allies will continue with their struggle to stop the implementation of PSS.
Meanwhile, while congratulating the BN candidate Datuk
Mohamad Alani for winning the Kimanis seat, Jamain hoped Mohamad would serve
his constituents well as promised during the election campaign.- By Michael Teh
