Johor DAP slams PKR for 'racist' standards

Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau has slammed the state's PKR leadership for what he claims as "racist standards" set by the latter in seat negotiation talks.

chua jui ming pc 130308 talk"PKR Johor under the leadership of (Dr) Chua Jui Ming has set its own unreasonable guidelines of seats negotiation by belittling DAP as a Chinese chauvinist party and only fit to contest in Chinese-majority seats of 60 percent Chinese voters in Johor.

"Chua has used the very same racial connotation propagated by Umno's mainstream media to judge DAP's position in Pakatan Rakyat.

"Indeed I have repeatedly reminded Chua as a newcomer in PKR and Pakatan, he should not use such an unreasonable racist standard in negotiating seats in Pakatan," he said in a statement today.

Chua was a a retired minister in BN before joining PKR in 2009 and was subsequently appointed as Johor PKR chief.

While reiterating that the majority of seats contested by DAP in Johor were mixed seats, Boo also responded to PKR's criticism for posting his dissatisfaction over seat negotiations on micro-blogging site, Twitter.

"When I posted on Twitter...It only reflected my unhappiness towards relationships (that) have deteriorated rapidly among Pakatan Johor component parties over the past one year to the extent of threatening unity among Pakatan members," he said.

Boo had earlier revealed that DAP which contested six of 26 parliamentary seats in Johor in 2008 wants an equal share in the next general election but PKR which had contested 11 seats is unwilling to concede some of them to DAP. PAS had contested eight seats while another was a walkover for BN.

Johor PKR deputy secretary-general Steven Choong, in a statement yesterday, accused Boo of boasting that he was the only candidate capable of winning an unnamed parliamentary seat in Johor and would possibly sabotage it if he was not allowed to contest there.

Responding to the accusation, Boo revealed the seat concerned was Gelang Patah and fingered Chua for what he describes as "malicious lies" and accused the Johor PKR chief of wanting the seat for himself.

"On the contrary, Chua declared at the (negotiation) meeting that he has been personally assigned by (PKR Supremo) Anwar Ibrahim to contest in Gelang Patah parliamentary (seat) and no one else should challenge him," he said.

Prior to Chua's entry to PKR, the former Bakri MP chose not to recontest his seat which then saw MCA losing it to DAP's Er Teck Hwa.

Chua might go for Gelang Patah

With DAP now holding the Bakri parliamentary seat, there is speculation that Chua might contest in the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat which consists of the Skudai state seat, currently held by Boo.

NONEBoo (left) reasoned that DAP stood a better chance of winning the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat which was lost by PKR in 2008 as the combined votes of the two state seats contested by DAP and PAS within that parliamentary constituency was more than what PKR had garnered.

"Pakatan might have well captured Gelang Patah Parliament seat in the 2008 General Elections if it was contested by the DAP instead of PKR."

Furthermore, he explained that the said seat was contested by DAP and PKR on a rotational basis based on an agreement in 1999 with the then Johor PKR chief Abdul Ahmad Razak but PKR had contested it twice in a row in 2004 and 2008 as Abdul Ahmad had passed away in 2007.

"Chua (right) should release his psychological baggage as a former BN cabinet minister and try to abide by all previous agreements in Pakatan Johor," said Boo.

Calling on Johor PKR to stop the "malicious lies" against him and the state's DAP, Boo is also demanding an apology from his counterpart.

On Thursday, Chua had criticised Boo for airing his grouses in public, stating that the latter was in violation of Pakatan's discipline and that he would not "stoop to the same level".

However, Boo claimed that his move was necessary to defend "DAP's dignity".
