Tanjung Aru Sunshine Gathering with new intakes

KOTA KINABALU, May 13, 2012: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Tanjung Aru CLC successfully held its Sunshine Gathering at a restaurant at Tanjung Aru with the intake of 55 new members who will form the core of the SAPP campaign team in the coming general elections for Tanjung Aru constituency.

"Shortage of housing programme, immigrants and illegal squatters, serious rubbish problem causing health and environmental hazard are something which the Tanjung Aru folks had put up for far too long.

Its Secretary-General Datuk Richard Yong was speaking at a Sunshine programme organized by SAPP Tanjung Aru CLC.

Datuk Richard, in his welcoming speech highlighted series of problems in Tanjung Aru area, most of which have been old problems unresolved for the last few decades.

"Every Mayor who visited Tanjung Aru would comment about the rubbish in the area and pledged to resolve this unsightly problem together with the YB concerned," Richard said.

"Mayor come and Mayor go, even with a third Mayor now, the problems still persisted, this government had completely failed the people.

"They even allowed the Prince Philip Park to stay un-maintained and remain at a deplorable and shameful state for so many years.

Richard (Left - Showing the Tanjung Aru beach area development plan to the audiences at the SAPP gathering) said the government could have used part of the 60 acres Railways station land to provide medium and low cost housing for the Tanjung Aru residents instead, they had chose to let a listed company to develop the land into billions ringgit high end commercial complexes and condominiums which are out of reach for the ordinary people.

"The government must be transparent and must spell out the terms and conditions and what does the State government gained from this project on the railway department's land by a listed company.

Richard further commented, "This BN government had its eyes only for the rich and wealthy, focusing on mega projects while completely neglecting the interests of the ordinary people and general public."

"For example, the Chief Minister had announced the plan to develop the land near Tanjung Aru beach in January this year and claimed that this projects is a gift for Sabah people.

"Unfortunately, we can't see how the general public of Kota Kinabalu going to benefit from this profit-driven projects which plans to take up almost the whole of 52 hectares of state land for resorts, hotels, condominium developments.

"From what has been drawn up in the development plan by the town planning office, the land along the famed Tanjung Aru beach had all been earmarked for commercial development.

"Members of public and families would lose the third beach which used to be a favourite place for family outing and picnicking and would find it difficult to access to the beach all for the sake of some resorts and hotels and chalets development to be enjoyed by the rich and wealthy few.

"The government must provide more open space and public facilities and not taking the land away from the people.

"It is utterly unfair that this government should deprive the people of the beach land and we SAPP want to ask the government to scrap any plan which is unfair to the general mass, said Richard.

More than 350 people attended the meet and listened to speeches delivered by SAPP Tanjung CLC Chairman Datuk Richard yong, YB Melanie Chia, former MP for Gaya Datuk Philip Yong and Party President Datuk Yong Teck Lee.
