Jeff: ‘We are all frogs, even Musa and Pairin’

Luke Rintod

There no longer exists any Sabah politicians who can claim that they were not 'frogs', says political maverick Jeffrey Kitingan.

KENINGAU: Maverick politician Jeffrey Kitingan, often accused of being a political frog, launched a stinging attack on Sabah politicians for lacking integrity and being unable to fight for the state.

He rebuked those who claim he was a “political frog” for jumping from party to party, saying unlike him, all local leaders had switched allegiances and had forsaken their political principles.

Now the Sabah chairman of the State Reform Party (STAR), he said there were no Sabah politicians who could claim they were not “frogs” as it was well known that they had switched allegiances a number of times to gain or remain in power.

“We are all frogs; even Chief Minister [Musa Aman], even Parti Bersatu Sabah president [Joseph Pairin Kitingan] lack political integrity.

Jeffrey, the younger brother of Joseph Pairin, however, said at the launching of the party branch in Bingkor on Sunday that he had switched parties several times in order to look for solutions for Sabah and “not for my own interest”.

The Harvard University-trained scholar said he had done so because other Sabah leaders had failed to resolve the state’s perennial problems despite joining the government.

With a broad sweep of the brush, he painted all Sabah politicians with the same label they had tarred him with as they had “all in one way or another switched sides to further their political careers” and that they only stopped “hopping” the moment they got positions and personal comfort.

He said among Sabah politicians, sacrificing the aspirations of the people was nothing new.

For now, he said, these “selfish leaders” would stick with the ruling Umno as long as the party is in government or as long as they have their own position but would jump to other parties if Umno is no longer ruling.

“They are actually fat frogs now so they don’t jump anymore,” he said.

‘STAR has its perjuangan’

Likening Sabah BN component parties to “buffaloes led by their nose”, he accused them of being traitors to Sabahans and puppets of Peninsular-based Umno and that they have no choice but to sing Umno’s tune to remain in power.

“We in STAR have our ‘perjuangan’, but they have lost theirs. They have forgotten because they are full now, because they are intoxicated by projects,” he said in one of his most stinging attacks yet against Sabah leaders working in cahoots with Umno, including his own brother Pairin.

Chiding those who ridiculed his party hopping, Jeffrey said none of the parties he joined would carry his struggle to regain the independence of Sabah.

He said everyone fell for lucrative positions and self-comfort.

“Sabah is an independent country by itself. Whoever subscribes to a vision of an independent Sabah should join us in STAR now and make sure Umno’s stooges are defeated in the coming general election,” he told an appreciative crowd of more than 400.

He also warned Sabahans that they would be getting “out of the frying pan and into a fire” by supporting other opposition parties such as PKR as they were peninsular Malaysia-based parties who would only weaken Sabah and strengthen Malayan hegemony over Sabah.

“Don’t be disheartened as the coming election is another opportunity God gives us to change the situation. As long as we are alive, we still have hope and it is this hope that makes the people support STAR,” he said, adding that STAR had registered 175,000 members in six months.

He promised that if STAR formed the next state government, it would double the monthly welfare aid to all qualified senior citizens from RM300 to RM600 and also RM500 would be placed in a savings account for each Sabahan baby born.

Jeffrey was later proclaimed by the organiser as the “Father of Struggle to Reclaim Sabah Rights” at the function and a group of children presented a plaque of a symbolic seven-pointed star to him to mark the launching of the Bingkor branch of the party.

  1. UNITE & SUPPORT STAR MERDEKA PERJUANGAN!

Jeffrey is honest to admit he once was a "frog" but he redeems himself by wanting to fight for Sabah independence. We can forgive him.

But none of the Sabah UMNO politicians have taken this stand....so they can still change sides and not be traitors to Sabah!

    Hidup Sabah Independence!

  2. I have always said that sometimes jumping or leaving is necessary because one's aspiration may one day differ from one's party. So what's the point of hanging around. It will make one more miserable or frustrated. Being fully obedient to a party sounds so communist. Leaders should adhere to the people more then to their party. A party is just a platform to stand and launch our ideologies. It should not be confused as a form of government or play a role in the management of a country. I support Jeffery and his cause because it is my aspiration as well but I must say that (according to article) promising an increase in welfare is not sufficient. He should be talking about the bigger picture or maybe he has.

    1. DO NOT CONFUSE PARTY DISCIPLINE WITH "COMMUNISM" OR BEING "UNDEMOCRATIC"

Without party discipline like PKR has been, it will be chaotic.

All organisations have rules for the good running of the body. It is like a club or country with rule and regulations. This is called the "rule of law".

Even with rules and regs UMNO BN runs Msia like a feudal empire. It is the rule of the corrupt elite against the people's interest. This is not democracy.

Party discipline means there need to be a chain of command like in an army with central command in the leadership.

A properly organised political party will be democratically elected under the "majority rule".

That means the "majority" opinion rules the party usually arrived at after meetings discussions and negotiations and resolutions put to the vote etc. Once a decision is made the memberships should follow through with implementing such such decision.

Without that "discipline" the unity of the party cannot be maintained and it will not have the will to achieve its goals.

It is clear from the STAR leadership proclamations, the leaders have discussed and agreed on what they intend to achieve through STAR just like all other political parties.

UMNO objective has for 55 years to create an apartheid system under the NEP and a patronage system to channel wealth to benefit its leaders and cronies through the NEP while ensuring support of the "bumis" who get favoured treatment by discriminating against non-"bumis".

UMNO members are motivated too keep party discipline because the members are well rewarded. Those who done toe the line are expelled... like Razaleigh (not an angel- he was at centre of the Sabah/S'wak) oil grab 1976) or Anwar and a few others.

Even if you kick football - you are coordinating your moves with your team mates while you drive the ball towards the goal! You cannot play against the other team by yourself.

Party discipline = Teamwork for a common goal.

Trust this thumb nail sketch will clarify!

    2. Understood. But from all the writings, since 'playball' was signalled, (THE FOUR DOCUMENTS), rules were never complied with. More like ad hoc rules cropping up throughout have been applied to cheat. Dr Jeffrey saw the foulness of it all. They are trying to put him down by calling him 'frog'. Lame.

    3. Yes yes, I see your point but I was referring to reasons as to why Jeffery was hopping. He didn't want to follow the parties that were not line to help the nation and hence left. Thats all.

  3. Definitely a lot of sour grapes out there. Mahatiri went far out to ISA Dr. Jeffrey. Many other so-called other frogs can't call Harvard as their Alma Mater. Dr. Jeffrey can because he is Harvard trained. Dr Jeffrey has been in the forefront to have brought awareness to Sabahans the existence of 20-Point Agreement, Malaysia Agreement, Intergovernmental Committee Report and Cobbold Commission Report all pertaining to Sabah being in during the formation of Malaysia. I am aware now that Sabah deserves much much better a deal. She has gotten a lot of duds instead. Dr Jeffrey has been highlighting the initial deals for us. And for that Dr Jeffrey had to spend (four years) of his life in detention in (Kamunting). Mahatiri was so happy to dumb and numb us down. Fancying all frogs to remain under coconut shells so he could glorify himself. What kind of a goon is happy surrounded by ignoramuses? Mahatiri. Well, HARK and HEAR the CLARION CALL NOW. SUPPORT DR JEFFREY, SUPPORT STAR SABAH

  7. Musa has never jump ship because USNO was his original party. USNO was dissolved for the purpose so that all members of the USNO can join Umno simultaneously.

Umno spread its wings to Sabah in 1990 in the events of PBS' back stabbing towards BN party. PBS joined the Semangat 46 near election in 1990.

All members of the USNO including Musa joined Umno when Umno as the opposition parties in the state.

Musa's action differs from Jefrrey. Jeffrey joined and exit party because he wants to be the president.

  8. Say NO to JUARA KATAKJune 28, 2012 at 11:46 AM

“We are all frogs; even Chief Minister [Musa Aman],...."
What is this man rambling about? JK is an obvious KING OF FROGS, or Juara Katak (Still JK). To the extent of my knowledge, there are NO records indicated that Musa has ever switch his allegiance.

Musa's political career started on March 8, 1992, when he contested and won the Jambongan UMNO division chief's post (now known as Libaran division) and was appointed as Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) treasurer eight days later.

In 1999, Musa contest in the state elections and defend the Sungai Sibuga State Legislative Assembly seat, defeating Ramli Noordin of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) by 4034 majority votes, the highest majority among the 24 seats contested by UMNO.

He moved up further in his political career when he was appointed Minister in the Chief Minister's Department under Datuk Osu Sukam in 1999.

On March 27, 2001, he became the Finance Minister in Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat's cabinet. On September 28, 2001, Musa replaced Osu Sukam as the Sabah UMNO Liaison Committee Chairman, which paved the way for him to be the Chief Minister.

Soon after taking his oath of office as Chief Minister, Datuk Musa outlined his agenda for the state. He had set his priorities on agriculture, tourism and manufacturing, putting them in what he calls the state's 'Halatuju' development framework, and supporting them by placing human resource development high on his agenda.

To support the first pillar of his 'Halatuju' campaign, tourism, a commitment of RM1.4 billion in federal funds was secured towards the building of a new Kota Kinabalu airport terminal, which was completed in 2008, ahead of schedule. A part of the old Kota Kinabalu port with warehouse facilities dating back to the early 1900s was transformed into Jesselton Point, a modern port with a high-class ferry terminal and other facilities. Under Datuk Musa tourism registered significant growth; Tourist arrivals to Sabah grew from 1.25 million arrivals in 2003 to nearly 2.1 million arrivals in 2006. The growth justified a further capital input into the tourism sector, with over RM1 billion made available via Special Tourism Fund of RM400 million for small projects and RM700 million for larger projects.

To support the second pillar—agriculture—the state government broke new ground in combining agriculture and manufacturing sectors into one by promoting bio-agriculture. The establishment of Palm Oil Industrial Clusters (POIC) is an example of bio-agriculture that promises to move the state's agricultural products up the value chain in the commodity markets.

To support the third pillar, manufacturing, in 2006 a total of 92 manufacturing projects were granted approval in the state with a projected total investment value of RM4.9 billion.

JK can't even match the achievements and contribution to the state by Musa. His remarks is just another justification for his past actions and he linked the man (Musa) with slanderous remarks claiming that he (Musa) "switched allegiances a number of times to gain or remain in power".

  31. Dear Jeff, I don't understand what is going on with you. You have been living in Sabah political scene for decades. You have been struggled in ISA, through all the pain and turbulences. Yet, you are saying that all Sabah politicians are frogs and not you?!

This sounds funny. I mean you are one of the prominent hoppers too, and why you have to conclude each and every one of the leaders are hoppers? This statement has totally cut you down buddy. You're actually saying yourself, for god's sake! You make yourself appeared needy and desperate! And one thing, when you hop to another party, you'll give bad feedbacks about your previous party. What are you trying to convey?

Honestly, I think you are YTL alike. Saying rubbish all the time, and hope for supports. And why specifically have to mention about Musa and Pairin? Just because they didn't give an opportunity for you to be the President? C'mon Jeff, this is not America.

Who's being selfish? You're one of the selfish person too. You're just running for the post, not even want to contribute anything. Personally, both Musa and Pairin have done a lot for Sabah. Remember RCI, KDM College and more. Oh talking about KDM College, you claimed that that is not for the KDM, speficially right? But as far as I concerned, most of the population in Tambunan are actually local and even KDMs, so what's the point?

Please get your facts right Jeff or else you will end up in another round of, living within the walls.

  32. He promised that if STAR formed the next state government, it would double the monthly welfare aid to all qualified senior citizens from RM300 to RM600 and also RM500 would be placed in a savings account for each Sabahan baby born.

  34. I don't think Datuk Pairin and Datuk Musa Aman is a frog. They still in their party even in BN component.

PBS formed the state government after winning the 1985 state elections and governed Sabah from 1985 to 1994. Following the 1986 Sabah riots, PBS joined the BN coalition after winning the May 1986 state election. However, on the eve of the July 1990 state election, PBS pulled out of the coalition and won the state election for a third time. It also won the 1994 state elections by a narrow margin. However, numerous defections occurred as many PBS representatives switched allegiance to the then opposition BN coalition before PBS were even able to form a new state government; these politicians were nicknamed "katak" or frog. JK is one of the frog that jumped to opposition parties in Sabah. How many parties that he already join?? But still not satisfied. Because he got personal agendas in his plans.

Datuk Musa's political career started on March 8, 1992, when he contested and won the Jambongan UMNO division chief's post (now known as Libaran division) and was appointed as Sabah BN treasurer eight days later. In March 1999 he resigned as the Sabah Foundation Director to contest in the state elections and defend the Sungai Sibuga State Legislative Assembly seat, defeating Ramli Noordin of PBS by 4034 majority votes, the highest majority among the 24 seats contested by UMNO. On March 27, 2001, he became the Finance Minister in Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat's cabinet. On September 28, 2001, Datuk Musa replaced Osu Sukam as the Sabah UMNO Liaison Committee Chairman, which paved the way for him to be the Chief Minister.

But how about JK how many seat he won? in which party?? He is the king of frog. Based on his history, I think in future he will always be a frog. See after 13th GE what will happen to him. What will happen to Star.

  38. Again and again this man talking about to brings changes in Sabah. How long has he been in this politics carrier? Is been in this industry for ages. First he tried to create tension among the people when he fails to protect himself as a thief in Yayasan Sabah. He is also have a very bad history back to his earlier involves in Politic. He has been detained under the ISA (Internal Security Act) for spreading something that can endanger the security in Sabah.. He is also known as a "frog" for jumping several of times to other party to another party. After a years he had tried hard to get in power but he never get it. He did not stop and he applied to join UMNO in 2003 but sadly to say that he had been rejected. I am thinking, what was he thinking when he made the decision to Join UMNO? He never stop to get in power and now he is creating his own empire and he form so many parties.

Looking back his life's chronology, is he deserve to have the people votes? Is he have anything to be proud of? Is he the one who bring the development in Sabah?

The answer is NO! He has done nothing in Sabah. Datuk Musa is the one who bring the changes in Sabah. Since he take the responsible as Sabah CM, lots of things has been done. Lets compare Sabah in 20 years back and now. We have a new KKIA, We have 3 flyover (i guess there be more to come in the future), new train, lots of new shopping complex, new dam, new water treatment plant, to mention a few. But i believe that as a Sabahans you can see the differences between the years. Datuk Musa manage to bring Sabah in a higher level and of course he might not be able to do this alone without the other ministers and not to forget the support from the people in Sabah.

Some info for Economy In Sabah:
During the global financial crisis in 2008, the state’s GDP registered a high growth of 7.8% cushioned by its bullish commodity prices before falling marginally to only 0.7% in 2009 due to the lagged tail effect of the crisis.in line with the global economic recovery, the Malaysian economy is expected to expand between 5% and 6% supported by domestic demand as well as pro-growth strategies and measures introduced in the 2011 National Budget. The manufacturing and services sectors are forecast to expand at 6.7% and 5.3% respectively next year and domestic demand is forecast to increase by 5.8%, led by growth in private investment of 10.2% and private expenditure of 7%.
The per capital income is forecast to increase 6% from RM26,355 this year to RM27,950 in 2011 or in chasing power parity terms, from USD14,102 to USD16,028.
Until today we still having a good economic and manage to call more private sector to invest in Sabah. It has been reported that Sabah worth RM10b higher investment.
Good economic is influence by the good politics and good social life in Sabah. So it is not make sense why we must support Jeffery Kitingan whereas we have a good politic, economic and social.

  40. hello warga pembaca sekalian,

Kenapa STAR pilih Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan jadi Ketua parti?

  43. Apa yang dia cakap memang benar sekali..
walaupun Jeff ni banyak lompat parti, tapi dia tidak pernah makan duit.
sekiranya dia ni lompat perti semata-mata demi duit, buat apa dia mau tubuh STAR.
