Two Sabah MPs expected to announce pullout this week

Joseph Bingkasan

Will Upko's Wilfred Bumburing and Umno's Lajim Ukin announce their exit from their respective parties on July 15?

KOTA KINABALU: National coalition MPs Wilfred Bumburing and Lajim Ukin are expected to announce their pullout from their respective parties during gatherings in Tuaran and Beaufort, respectively on July 15.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim will be attending both functions where the two are expected to become “independent” MPs.

Bumburing who is Tuaran MP will make his much awaited announcement in Tuaran in the morning while in the afternoon Beaufort MP Lajim is to formalise his departure from the BN at his hometown in Beaufort.

Although both leaders would be declaring that they are leaving the government coalition parties in the presence of Anwar, they are not expected to join either PKR or other opposition Pakatan Rakyat component members.

Bumburing, a former Deputy Chief Minister and ex-Tamparuli asemblyman is BN’s component United Pasokmomogun Dusun Murut Organisation (Upko) deputy president while Lajim, the current Federal Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister, is an Umno supreme council member.

Both leaders, who were founder members of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) before leaving the party led by Joseph Pairin Kitingan in 1994, had openly announced that they would be contesting to defend their respective seat in the coming general election.

The announcement by Bumburing and Lajim on Sunday will put to an end to months of speculation that they are leaving their respective parties, ahead of the general election as both are unlikely be nominated by BN to defend their seats.

The two were supposed to announce their departure from the BN on June 10 also in the presence of Anwar but the plan was thwarted by heavy rains that prevented Anwar’s flight from touching down at Kota Kinabalu International Airport on time making it impossible for him to keep his appointments in Tuaran and Beaufort, both about an hour’s drive away.

Anwar is confirmed to attend this weekend’s events and organisers of both gatherings have also extended invitations to the Sabah chapter of the State Reform Party (STAR) which is headed by Jeffrey Kitingan.

‘Independent’ incumbents

STAR deputy chairman Daniel John Jambun told FMT in Kota Kinabalu today that his party had been invited to both functions and the leaders attending would be seated alongside Anwar and other opposition leaders.

Jambun did not say whether Kitingan would be attending but said all STAR leaders would be in Labuan the following day (July 16) for the launching the newly formed party’s division in the Federal Territory.

Bumburing, who is NGO Amanah deputy president and head of the Sabah chapter, is said to be leaving BN to enable him to contest having made a pledge in 2008 with Upko secretary general Wilfred Tangau to step aside for him in the next general election.

They agreed that Bumburing would contested Tuaran and remain MP for one term before “returning the seat” to the latter in the coming election. In the last election Tangau was the incumbent MP.

In Lajim’s case, he had stated last month that Umno would not give him the opportunity to defend Beaufort which prompted him to resign as head of the party branch and decline election for the Beaufort division.

In resigning as a branch head, Lajim said he would be defending Beaufort in the election but stopped short of saying what ticket he would be using to contest against BN.

He claims to have the solid support of the voters in his constituency.

    1. Bro, pls dont spread lies against Star.
If you are true and patriotic Sabahan, you should support Star.
Do you want Sabah to remain 1 of 13 states in Malaysia?
Do you want Sabah to give 95% oil to Petronas?

Star wants Sabah to be 1 of 3 equal partners in Malaysia.
Autonomous Sabah with 1-country 2-system within Malaysia.
Take back at least 50% of Sabah's oil, cheaper oil and diesel for Sabahans, subsidy for cheaper electricity.
Recognise NCR claims and give priority of land to Sabahans.

Under Umno/BN, their policies are clear.
Sabah is fixed deposit, everything belongs to Umno/BN owner.
Sabah's oil belongs to Petronas, give back 5%.
Sabah's land belongs to politicians and cronies and priority give to companies. Even Yayasan Melaka and Yayasan Selangor get land in Sabah. Can Selangor and Melaka give their land to Yayasan Sabah?
If native claim 15-acres NCR, the answer is no.
If company apply for land even with NCR, give company 25,000 acres.
Practice divide and rule over Sabah politics?

If you don's support what Star wants to do, it means 3 things?
Means you are ignorant of Sabah's rights, you are not a Sabahan or you are a traitor Sabahan?

    2. FOR NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT POLITICAL OBJECT IS TO UNITE ALL SABAH PARTIES TO WIN MAJORITY SEATS & WE ARE IN A POSITION TO DEMAND SABAH INDEPENDENCE

All genuine pro-Sabah independence parties must really trash out the power sharing issues and get your priority right.

Form a Sabah United Front party which some leaders are proposing. This is the best way to move forward. There is not single Sabah party which enjoys total mass support.

The STAR party seems to be making progress with their drive for independence and is setting the tone for the real struggle to come.

The struggle should not be struggle between Sabah parties but against Malayan domination.

For Sabah's sake think about how to unite not fight each other! If we continue in this fashion Sabah will have to suffer another 50 years of Malayan colonial domination, rule and plunder.

      No real Sabahans want this.

  8. When we say STAR could b BN proxy, some die hard and idiotic supporter of STAR will say we r PR, SAPP or other supporters.
We have the right to opine and make assumption based on our own observations n rationing.
I could also challenge you how sure are you STAR is not what we claim it to be? What if they do?
STAR is harping on issues which are as good as impossible to obtain and to stir up Sabahan hatred n disbelief all parties from peninsula. They re doing it so that Sabahan shut the door on PR. BN already inside. STAR also reluctant to work with PR. So it remain that BN will likely fight with STAR n SAPP pact and PR.... thus splitting d votes into at least 3 block. This will eneasy BN to win say 60%, PR 20% and STAR/SAPP 20%. STAR /SAPP will then become king maker, would likely swing to BN!!!

  9. Star is here to spoil the party and make thing complicated. The could b funded by BN just like PERKASA, PEKIDA etc. Their aim or duty is so simple.... Get Sabahan to anti party Malaya so that all opposition votes goes to them.

Honestly STAR alone can never beat BN.

Lets look at the extreme, if STAR beaten BN and start to take Sabah out of Malaysia ... Can we guarantee JK can be a good leader? Will there be any smooth power transfer? Filipino will rise to grab the power from inside and outside. Sabah will b in total chaos then!!!

    Corruption will still be same.

  10. AnonymousJuly 10, 2012 5:24 PM must be a non Sabahan or die hard Bn supporter who doesn't believe in the struggle for Sabah or out of touch of Sabah political situation / development. What do we gain from Malaya colonization?? Sabah must leave Malaysia if we want to progress forwards and must take control of all our natural resources.
Singapore left and Brunei did not join, did any foreign nations attack them ? Although I'm a fence sitter and not associate with political parties, I still believe that STAR or SAPP has done a good job to bring our numerous / contiguous issues on Sabah under the present situation in which we are being colonized by Malaya. Just give the local opposite parties a chance to governance our State before anyone pass any judgement on them. Knowing the history of corrupted UMNO/Bn regime, can we trust them again to continue to rule and determine our destiny??

    2. I think the guy has a valid point. Chaos will happen if jk brings or about to bring Sabah out of M'sia.
Singapore have no PATI then so is Brunei, so it would be unfair to equate it with Sabah. But this will never happen because BN too strong and STAR / SAPP are the stumbling block for PR to join a pact with them. Greed for money n power also arrogant play a big part on the pretext of whatever excuses JK not willing to cooperate
