Talks over and 'no' to the group's demands

KOTA KINABALU - Police are finalising certain details prior to deporting the armed group of foreigners that encroached into Kg Tanduo in Lahad Datu last Tuesday, as negotiations have come to an end.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Director Datuk Salleh Mat Rasid said police are aware that the weather has not been good for sea travel, as they had to look in terms of safety.

"We did not entertain any demands set by them and also did not give them any recognition," he said when asked if police agreed to the group's demands to be recognised as the Royal Soldiers of the Sultanate of Sulu and for people of Sulu origin in Sabah not to be deported to the Philippines.

Salleh said this at a media conference after attending a police meet-and-greet the people session in conjunction with Ops Selamat II here.

Also present was State Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib.

"What is important is that the safety of this State is always guaranteed and we will go through with the deportation soon," Hamzah (right) said.

On personnel strength at the area, he said, police have enough to control the situation but the figure could not be revealed because it concerns security. "I assure the people not to worry and that everything is under control," he said.

"Police are making efforts to deport them," he said when asked when the first group was scheduled for deportation.

"Now we can only carry out the process of sending them back so that they can find a suitable channel to air their demands," he said, when asked about talk that the group was not keen on going back.

"Whether they agree or not, we have to deport them.

They are not supposed to say anything, they are in our country.

They came in illegally and so we have told them if they want to voice out certain demands it must be in the correct platform through the properly channel.

He denied rumours that the group flew the Philippine flag in the area.

On reports that the negotiations involved a person identified as Datuk Ismail Kiram, a descendant of the Sulu sultanate, he said, that so far no such person was involved in the negotiation.

"I told you that we are on top of the situation," he said, when asked if the deportation would be smooth and without any untoward incidents.

On reports that another 1,000 people have left Tawi-Tawi and was heading for Sabah, he said, it was not true.

"How can they leave Tawi-Tawi because we've got our Navy, Malaysian Marine Enforcement Agency and Police Marine there to monitor," he said.

Hamzah also did not wish to comment on the statement issued by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin, that the group was armed.

"We did not see any weapons when we entered the area but we do not rule out that they might have weapons and we are not taking any chances," Hamza said.
