Sulu Sultanate not keen on retrieving fighters' remains

MANILA - The Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo is not keen on retrieving from Sabah the bodies of its 28 fighters who have been reported as killed by Malaysian security forces since March 5.

“In line with the preaching of Islam, why would we still disturb the souls and the spirits of the deceased? They are now rested in peace,” said Abraham Idjirani, spokesman of the sultanate.

“You know, among Muslims, kuntento na ang isang tao basta mailibing siya within 24 hours,” Idjirani added.

According to the teachings of Islam, a deceased person must be buried within 24 hours after his or her death. After the 17-day standoff erupted in a firefight on March 1, the Sulu sultanate asked Malaysia for a ceasefire to be able to bury their dead.

Since March 5, Malaysian security forces had conducted offensive operations to flush out Kiram’s followers. According Sabah Police Commissioner Hamza Taib, 61 of the sultan's followers had been killed from March 5 to 15.

The Malaysian government had written the Philippine government regarding the repatriation of the bodies in three days, although it did not specify the dates for this period.

"We have sent the letters through our Foreign Ministry. In fact, today there will be a meeting between the Foreign Ministry and the Philippine Embassy. Technically the three-day period has not lapsed yet," Taib said in a report by news network GMA-7.

Propaganda

Idjirani said the offer of the Malaysian government to have the remains of the dead fighters retrieved and sent back to the Philippines is just another “black propaganda.”

Idjirani said should the Sultanate of Sulu agree to retrieve their dead fighters from Sabah, the retrieval team should be guaranteed immunity from arrest or harassment by a neutral country.

“Now the proposition of Malaysia is another black propaganda. First of all, there is no definition of conditions on how the retrieval is to be done. It is also very alarming on the part of the Sultanate of Sulu as without the intercession of a neutral country, Malaysia could order the arrest of the retrieval team and accuse them of being members of the Royal Security Force,” he said.

Idjirani added that the retrieval of the deceased fighters should be covered by media both local and international and be made in the presence of a neutral humanitarian organization such as the Red Crescent or the International Committee of the Red Cross.

He also said that Malaysia should also allow an independent group to conduct autopsies on the remains of the dead sultanate fighters to prove that they were indeed killed in combat and were not tortured to death.

“If that should happen, we challenge Malaysia to allow an independent body to conduct autopsies on the remains. We have still to solicit the consent of the relatives,” he said.

Idjirani believes that the 10 fighters earlier reported as captured by Malaysian security forces could have already been killed. He said that the refusal of Malaysia to present the 10 could mean that they are already dead.

Actually I am sick with this in the news everyday. I am living in Sandakan Sabah and have friends living in Lahad Datu!

We all wonder what the hell is the BN or UMNO trying to prove! First of aqll there are only about 200-300 people who landed on Feb 9th and the government know! Ok so far so good, Instead of finding out if they were terrorist aor as they call it, *INTRUDERS* they didn't make any attempts to investigate but instead...gave them food and water....FED THEM! then with growing concern by the Sabahans, two weeks later then started to cut off their food supply!

The IDIOT, HOME MINISTER said they are not terrorist and now they call them terrorist!Ok the people of Sabah wonders why the BN /UMNO morons is making this look like a full scale war when in actual fact there is no threat. For your information, everyday lives goes on as usual, there is no trouble and because the idiotic UMNO morons made it look like it is so unsafe that it is causing harm to the Sabahans. Business here are affected and people don't go out at night and shops are force to close at 6pm! even restaurants and coffee shops which used to stay open till 12am, now closes at 6-9pm! Not because it is unsafe and there are army and trucks around but cs no business!

Latest we have the greatest PRETENDER himself, visiting the troops as if it is a full scale warfare.....STUPID BN/UMNO ESP THE GOOD FOR NOTHING DEVIL HIMSELF, MAMAK KUTTY.....YOU HAVE RETIRED....FOR FCUK SAKE...GO TO HELL!

    2. If you are anaksarawak living in Sandakan, you are not a Sabahan.

Your opinion does not reflect understanding, but just bad manner. You are not from Sandakan and you just pretend to have friends in Lahad Datu.

      1. "Actually I am sick with this in the news everyday."

Sandakan people want the news because it matters to them. Lahad Datu people want the news because it matters to them. I can understand how sick you are because you are not from here. So, you know what to do.

      2. "We all wonder what the hell is the BN or UMNO trying to prove!"

BN/UMNO does not have to prove anything to you. They govern so that you are safe to surf the Internet and have good time.

      3. "Ok the people of Sabah wonders why the BN /UMNO morons is making this look like a full scale war when in actual fact there is no threat."

You are not a Sabahan, please do not speak on our behalf. But, I do respect your right to express your opinion.

It IS NOT a full scale war as you have pointed it out. Indeed, it is a threat, if you will, but not to you, but rather to those villagers in that area. Your friends in Lahad Dato, if any, are most likely staying somewhere else very far from ground zero. It is not a threat to them either.

Count your blessing, like million of other Malaysians, that not you or any member of your family is involved in the conflict. I am happy your family is safe. God bless them all. Please tell that to the families of our fallen heroes. A simple gesture of "thank you" will do.

      4. "Latest we have the greatest PRETENDER himself, visiting the troops as if it is a full scale warfare.....STUPID BN/UMNO ESP THE GOOD FOR NOTHING DEVIL HIMSELF, MAMAK KUTTY.....YOU HAVE RETIRED....FOR FCUK SAKE...GO TO HELL!"

You have every reason to be angry.
I am very sure your mother will not be very happy with your language, but I am not complaining because not every one is born and raised in the same manner. Millions of Filipinos are good people. There are some exactly like you. But, I am not complaining. If they break the law, they face the music irrespective of race and religion. If armed robbers enter your house and rape your privacy (not your mother, sister or wife ok), please don't call the Police. They are very busy in Lahad Datu. By, the way, before you call the Police, have you pay your tax.

There are many devilish, retired mamak kutty in town. If it is your father, I am sorry I don't know him. I don't want to know him either.

  16. Bahkan Amerika Syarikat sendiri pun, terpaksa belajar daripada Malaysia taktik peperangan berkenaan walaupun pada suatu peringkat Amerika Syarikat 'tidak berpuas hati' kerana Malaysia enggan mengajar sepenuhnya kaedah berkenaan.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Setiausaha Luar Filipina Albert del Rosario juga berkata, beliau sekali lagi meminta Malaysia melanjutkan masa, empat hari yang diminta hujung minggu lalu, bagi kumpulan penceroboh berkenaan meninggalkan Lahad Datu.

    ReplyDelete

  44. Siapakah sultan yang sebenarnya ini. Memang jika dilihat Jamalul kiram 111 ini bukannya sultan tapi seorang penganas.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak menempelak pemimpin pembangkang yang menuduh insiden pencerobohan bersenjata di Lahad Datu, Sabah sebagai satu sandiwara sedangkan pasukan keselamatan negara berkorban nyawa bagi mempertahankan negara.

    ReplyDelete
  46. kerajaan Barisan Nasional (BN) tidak pernah mengarahkan anggota keselamatan melakukan sandiwara sebaliknya mengarahkan mereka mempertahan dan menjaga kedaulatan negara.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Most heirs to long-dead sultanates would be laughed out of the room if they laid claim to modern territory on the basis of a 135-year old claim. Yet, with the self-styled Sultan of Sulu sending an armed gang to invade Sabah on the basis of such a claim, let us consider whether his claim is valid.

    ReplyDelete
  48. First of all, Jamalul Kiram is just one of nine claimants to the defunct title of Sultan of Sulu. He is by no means the recognised heir, rather he has chosen to call himself the "Sultan", his brother the "Crown Prince", and his daughter "Princess" etc. More importantly, the Sulu sultanate was itself abolished way back in 1917.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The Sulu claim to Sabah stems from its acquisition by the Sulu sultanate in 1704 as a reward for helping the Sultan of Brunei to quell a rebellion. In 1878, the then Sulu ruler ceded the territory to the British North Borneo Company (NBC), which, in turn, transferred sovereign rights over Sabah to Britain in 1946.

    ReplyDelete
  50. When the British granted independence to the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, Sabah was one of the territories turned over to Malaysia, which continues to pay a token rent to the heirs of the Sulu sultanate to this day. That in a nutshell is the history.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It is important to remember that, after Sabah was ceded to Britain in 1946, neither the Sulu clan, nor the Philippine government that was its formal successor, made any claim on Sabah till 1962. The fact that they didn't see fit to raise this claim for sixteen years shows that they realised an opportunity much later.

    ReplyDelete
  52. In June 1962, the Philippine government lodged a formal claim to sovereignty over Sabah, or British North Borneo as they called it. But Malaysia's claim proved far stronger.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The legal question centred on the translation of the Malay-Arabic word 'pajak' that appeared in the vernacular version of the 1878 agreement that handed Sabah over to the British North Borneo Company (NBC). In common parlance, the term could be used to denote both "to lease" or "to cede".

    ReplyDelete
  54. The British and Malayan governments pointed out that the English language document agreed by the Sultan of Sulu categorically stated that the land was ceded "forever and until the end of time", and not leased as the Philippines claimed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Malaya's position was further reinforced by the International Court of Justice ruling that "a historic title, no matter how persuasively claimed on the basis of legal instruments and exercise of authority, cannot – except in the most extraordinary circumstances – prevail in law over the rights of non-self-governing people to claim independence and establish their sovereignty through the exercise of bona fide self-determination."

    ReplyDelete
  56. Indeed, in line with the internationally accepted principle of self-determination, the people of Sabah expressed their preference to join the larger Malaysian Federation through a free referendum in 1962 that was supervised by a United Nations fact-finding mission.

    ReplyDelete
  57. And again in the 1963 election, the majority of the people of Sabah showed they had no desire to be a part of the Philippines, or, for that matter, of the historical Sulu sultanate.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That is where the matter rests today. To mollify Jamalul Kiram, the Philippine government is now considering taking Malaysia to the International Court of Justice, but any Philippine claim to Sabah stands little chance of being recognised.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It is perhaps ironic that Sabah first came into Sulu possession in 1704 because they helped end an uprising, yet in 2013 the Sulu claimants are trying to regain it by attempting an armed intrusion themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is their last stab at history, before the Sulu claim will have to give way finally to the modern reality.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  65. The Lahad Datu invasion episode is no more than a pretentious display of authority by the pretender Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III and those in cahoots with him.
The ridiculous action taken by Jamalul and his loyal militants is an act in futility. What more when Malacanang palace itself has made it clear that the Sulu Sultanate is now defunct with the last recognised sultan being Sultan Jamalul Ikram II (1884-1936).

    ReplyDelete
  66. A group of 234 militants led by Jamalul’s brother the so called Rajah Muda Agbimuddin Kiram landed in Kampung Tanduo on Feb 9, ostensibly to renew the so called sultanate’s claim over Sabah.

After weeks of negotiating a peaceful departure of the armed invaders, Malaysia had no choice but boot them out.

And after many of his free booting mercerneries died fighting, Jamalul in a face saving attempt stated that they would never surrender in Lahad Datu and would fight until their last men.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The ‘Sulu Sultan’s’ condescending attitude were further compounded by the polemics of the Sultan’s brother ‘Sultan Bantilan Esmail Kiram II’ and pride of Jamalul’s daughter ‘princes’ Jacel Kiram.

Certain local leaders (opposition) and the Sulu Sultanate’s symphatisers in Sabah also provided certain recognition to Jamalul.

Even before the events started unraveling, an opposition leader in Sabah had admitted of meeting the ‘Sultan of Sulu’.

However, he did not dwell into what transpired in the meeting and had clarified that the one he met was not Jamalul behind the current woes. This is not surprising as no less than six parties are claiming the throne of the Sulu Sultanate that is no longer recognised.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The local leader is said to be highly vocal over Sabah’s rights and autonomy.

However, since the incident, he has not been heard in the open.

Jamalul remained defiant right from the start, even when the Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino’s warned him that ‘you will not succeed’ (in claiming Sabah). He has been obstinate despite the fact 62 of his men have been killed along with 10 Malaysian security personnel.

Jamalul and his followers have no regards to history and the fact that Sabahan’s have decided Sabah (formerly known as North Borneo) as one of the states under the Malaysian Federation.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The stand taken by the Philippine Government during the formation of the Federation of Malaysia is well reported by the ‘Philippine Daily Inquirer’ daily that reproduced the original article quoting Senator Lorenzo Sumulong that appeared on the Manila Times dated 25 March 1963.

Sumulong in his privilege speech on Sabah (filed by President Diosdado Macapagal on June 22, 1962), said; “What is the gain of involving ourselves in North Borneo (now Sabah), if after all, even if we recover it, we are committed to the idea of letting the North Borneans determine what their eventual fate would be?… the better course to follow is for our government to inform the United Nations (UN) in due time, i.e., when the Federation of Malaysia Plan is submitted for consideration in the UN, that we are voluntarily relinquishing whatever claims of sovereignty we may have to any portion of North Borneo in order to accelerate the changing of its status from a non-self-governing territory to that of a self-governing or independent state and that we favour holding a plebiscite under UN auspices to give the people of North Borneo the opportunity to freely express their will and wishes…”

    ReplyDelete
  70. Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Dr Shariff AK Omang said the invasion could have been avoided if the group concerned understood the plebiscite conducted by the Cobbold Commission.

No matter what, the incident like mentioned by prime minister has served as a wakeup call for Malaysia to enhance its future planning and strategies in mitigating threats to the nation’s sovereignty.

Subsequent to the intrusion, UMS has established the Sabah Strategic Studies Centre as a platform to provide views, advice and information relating to future issues relating to safety, economy, social, history, education, politics and domestic issues.

“Now we are faced with a security threat, maybe in the future we may face threats to our economy and so forth,” he said.

However, all this and the historical facts are not good enough to convince Jamalul and his followers that their struggle is in vain.

    2. 1. "THE COBBOLD COMMISSION WAS AN "ENQUIRY" - TO FIND OUT IF THE BORNEO PEOPLE SUPPORTED THE MALAYSIA PROPOSAL...IT WAS NOT A FORMAL VOTE."

The Cobbold Commission was one of the legal instruments under the then British System. It was accepted by UN. It does not matter whether you accept it or not as it was recognised by UN.

Seriously, I don't care if Misuari or Kiram did not accept it either. They can argue with UN. You can too.

Let's move on and create better Malaysia.

I was too young at that time, but I remember my elders in the village did mentioned that Tun Mustapha came to visit them and the meeting took place in my father house then. The village where I was born was rather remote; no electricity, piped water, radio, TV or phone. I am not sure whether opinions from those odd 200 villagers were taken into account or even constitute 4% of the population. But, USNO won the first election. Parikatan (USNO/SCA/UPKO) won the election too. I guess that was the best available system at the material time to show support to the formation of Malaysia.

But, I did remember as a small boy, seeing Indonesian army marching into our village. It was fun to see soldiers. They did not caused any harm to us except all the houses were closed and the kampung was dead quiet. Now, I knew that was the confrontation. If Indonesian army were successful...

There were chaos too when several hundred Filipino vessels (we called them 'mundu') berthing across the sea. During the night, the sea front was full of lights from the vessels. I kind of like it as I seldom see such spectra of lights. The village was dead quiet and no light from any house. I did not know why. Now, I knew those vessels escaped from Mindanao when Marcos (Catholic Christian) massacred the Moros (Muslim Suluks) when they refused to invade Sabah. The incident is known as Jabida Massacre which was reported few days ago in PH media. It will be awesome if the Suluks did invade my village to claim Sabah. How about that.

Within the context of what happened around my village at the material time almost simultaneously, is there anybody out there..just anybody..have the audacity to tell me the Sabahan did not ever..ever given the chance to say "yes" or 'no"?

The history in the formation of Malaysia is the history about little people in my village, not about people sitting in front of laptop like me. I feel ashamed I was not the idiot in the middle of it all. Now, it is in my hand and I want to pass it to my children. The message that I told them is what has been passed to me; "bersyukur lah" ( count your blessing).

Malaysia is not perfect. Its history is not perfect. Please forgive me, I am not perfect like you after spending more than 20 years away from Sabah...many years outside Malaysia.

But, this is my Malaysia. No one can take it away from me.

      2. "THAT WAS ABOUT 4% OF THE POPULATION AT THE TIME...HOW CAN THIS FIGURE BE USED TO CLAIM THE BORNEO PEOPLE WANTED MALAYSIA???? NEITHER THE PEOPLE OF SABAH OR SARAWAK WERE EVER GIVEN THE CHANCE TO SAY "YES" OR "NO" TO THE MALAYSIA PROPOSAL!!!!!!!!"

I was too young at that time, but I remember my elders in the village did mentioned that Tun Mustapha came to visit them and the meeting took place in my father house then. The village where I was born was rather remote; no electricity, piped water, radio, TV or phone. 71. Cant believe there are still such idiot in Sabah. Firstly, jumped into conclusion and qualified himself to know best under the shield of Sabahan. Wake up you dont know that much and conscientious Malaysians of other states are trying to help. There are more qualified Sabahans working in other states than working in Sabah, so dont talk tough.

  73. Timbalan Ketua Polis Negara, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar berkata, kesemua mayat itu dijangka dikebumikan dalam tempoh terdekat.

  74. Menurut beliau, keputusan mengebumikan mayat-mayat tersebut dibuat selepas satu mesyuarat melibatkan Kementerian Dalam Negeri, Kementerian Luar, Jabatan Perdana Menteri dan Jabatan Peguam Negara.

  76. Bagaimanapun, Khalid berkata, pihaknya sedia bekerjasama dengan mana-mana waris yang mahu menuntut mayat pengganas berkenaan.
