Bung: Stop cyber crime and return my hijacked Twitter handle

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should introduce a specific legislation to prevent hijacking of identities in the virtual world, said Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.

“I'm very disappointed and disheartened that Malaysia's laws allow such a thing to happen.

“MCMC has not done anything to prevent this invasion,” the Umno supreme council member told The Star Online on Friday, adding that it has tarnished his image and infringed his rights.

Bung now tweets under @MYKinabatangan as his original @MPKinabatangan Twitter handle was claimed by someone else after Parliament was dissolved on April 3.

After dissolution, Bung felt he did not deserve to use @MPKinabatangan as he was then unsure if someone else would be picked to contest the seat.

However, he does not appreciate @MPKinabatangan being hijacked, nor its use of his picture and biodata in the profile information.

As Bung was re-elected to Parliament, netizens familiar with his original Twitter handle sometimes face confusion.

On Thursday, Bung had tweeted his objection to PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah being deported from Sabah, prompting @Qayzr to tweet "Even @MYKinabatangan said the deportation of Nurul Izzah is a 'malapetaka' ... or was it his parody account (@MPKinabatangan) I saw?”

Though the person behind @MPKinabatangan offered to free the @MPKinabatangan Twitter handle on Thursday, Bung refused to respond directly.

“If the hijacker is sane with a sound mind, then my original Twitter handle should indeed be surrendered back to me,” he said.

On April 8, Bung took to Twitter: “Making a police report at the Karamunsing Police Station at Kota Kinabalu, someone is using a fake account with name and tweet handle of Bung Moktar Radin” and tagged the person behind @MPKinabatangan.

Twitter allows users to create parody, commentary or fan accounts, but profile information must clarify that the account creator is not the same person as the subject of the parody or commentary.

Accounts clearly intended to deceive or confuse are prohibited as impersonation accounts and subject to suspension.
