Sabah Opposition leader to be known Monday

KOTA KINABALU - The question of who should be Sabah Opposition leader remains even as the 60 assemblymen took their oath of office before Speaker Datuk Salleh Tun Said on Thursday.

The 12-member opposition have not agreed as to who would lead them though the toss-up is between Datuk Lajim Ukin (PKR-Klias) and Datuk Wilfred Bumburing (PKR-Tamparuli).

Met after the ceremony, Lajim said the state PKR had proposed that he should be the one taking up the post. He said he would accept the responsibility if given the opportunity, adding that the opposition assemblymen would be meeting again and submit a name by Monday.

DAP's Sri Tanjung assemblyman Chan Foong Yin said his party preferred Wilfred to lead but would respect PKR's stand.

Lajim and Bumburing, though not PKR members won their seats on the party's ticket. They are among the seven PKR assemblymen while DAP has four and State Reform Party (STAR) one.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman led the oath-taking ceremony followed by his three Deputy Chief Ministers - Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Datuk Yahya Hussin and Datuk Raymond Tan.

Also taking their oaths were eight other members of the Sabah cabinet, 18 assistant ministers and 19 backbenchers, including former journalist Datuk Joniston Bangkuai (BN-Kiulu)

Musa said he hoped the assemblymen would act responsibly and with decorum during the proceedings.

"They have to carry out their duties entrusted by the people,” he added.

Lajim, a former deputy chief minister, said they would carry out their duties as opposition members and monitor the government's actions. "We will speak for the people and point out any weaknesses,” he said.

Yang DiPertua Negri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin is scheduled to deliver the government's policy speech when opening the State Assembly sitting on Monday (June 17).
